Right, my dad sent me up a DVD (+RW format) of .WMA audio files from home.

When I tried to copy them off the disc on to my hard drive I got an error message (below) and I have no idea why, but it won't copy some files off the DVD. It'll happily play them direct from the DVD in WMP, but I can't have them on my gard drive, so I have to keep inserting the DVD to listen to the music on it.

What does it mean? what is causing it? what can be done???

Cheers,

~ Paul

Short answer - you probably have a scratch on the DVD.

Long answer - CRC checks are done whenever you try to copy data off of one medium to another (hard drive, floppy, CD, DVD). If the system checks CRC bits from the file and it doesn't equal what it has read it will panic and refuse to complete the copy.

DVD's are not the best media in the world for sharing songs. They are more succeptable to scratches and data corruption. Stick with CD's as they are more fault tolerant...

...solution: have the disk reburned

It's the second time I've had this message, two different discs. why will tracks play but not copy?? It surely can't be scratched, can it???

Where they both DVD's? XP prefers audio CD's. The data storage on a DVD is MUCH more compressed so any little thing can mess up a CRC check...

PS: As you say, playing is not a problem, sometimes even if the DVD is scratched, but you can get CRC errors ad infinitum the second that you try to copy data to your hard drive. Play error are sometimes not even dicernable by the human ear/eye.

Yes. both times a DVD. I think the info should fit onto 2 CDs (or 3) so i'll get it sent up that way.
