That's a quick way to shaft the competition

Lucky swines!

They had to do something otherwise Ukonline would have cleared up.

I cant wait until March.

Believe it when I see it.

I was an early adopter of the 512k broadband from BT and waited on a promise of 1mb line for nearly 2 years.

In the end I gave up and switched to Nildram.

But will it make any real-world difference? I have 0.5Mb at home and 2Mb at work. I never get close to actual 0.5Mb download at home and can't see any noticable difference between that and work, apart from big, single-file downloads.

Currently I'm with them on 512k, should be interesting when it being upgraded to 1mb (that is big "if"!)

I'm not really bothered about it as I rarely use the net at home.

My mate has been 1mb from BT for months now...

He has a 30Gb monthly limit too, after a bit of haggling...

Its only a theoretical maxim. Real world data throughput depends mainly on contention ratios and quality-of-service (VBR, CBR etc) of the ISP.

There is a big difference between what is marketed as home/consumer broadband and business/pro broadband.

You pays your money etc.

I'm on 1Mb with no limits with Pipex. Fixed IP address and full business use (incl. running a server) and all usenet binaries for £36.95 ex VAT pcm. That also includes 12 separate POP3 email accounts and 50Mb of webspace.

Not the fastest or cheapest, but I've been with Pipex for almost a decade now and I've been happy with them so far.

BBC said:

But Britain continues to lag behind some countries - especially Japan and South Korea - which offer broadband speeds of up to 40Mbps.

But Mr Ingram said it was important to "separate hype from reality".

He said that a limited number of people with those connections consistently received speeds of 40Mbps.

Yes it occasionally drops to as little a 34 or 35Mbps.

I know of quite a few people out here (Japan) that have 100mbps pipes to their ISP. And I do not believe it's ADSL style either - upload pipes are equally large. It's more like a true ethernet link to the provider.

One guy at work is just debating upping his to a 2Gb link.

The internet being what it is, at these sorts of speeds your download rates are often limited to the other end, i.e. weakest link in the chain. But it's still nice to have and makes the speeds in the UK seem what they are - a joke and a rip off.

Still, you have to live with what you have, and even a 512Mb connection is better than the piss ant dial up speeds we had to contend with not *that* long ago.

What I want to see is more ADSL enabled exchanges and a greater range on the damn things.
Ok, true my 512kbps is much faster than dial-up but I want more... can't have it because I'm so far away from the exchange.

I switched from BT's consumer 512bps package to a 1Mbps business package from PlusNet and the different was amazing.

Had it around two years now with just one outage.

But still need more bandwidth!

I'm ono 512 from BT and was considering jumping ship across to Metronet this month to get 1mbps at a cheaper price. I think I'm going to wait a short time so that I can port directly across without having to pay a regrade fee

Got a letter from BT this morning confirming that our connection will be moving from 1Mb to 2Mb (completely unprompted)...

Only downside is the cap, it's dropping from 30Gb to 15Gb... But seeing as the most i've ever downloaded in a month was 18Gb, we should be ok.. (that was a REALLY heavy month!)

That's interesting. I got an email from BT last night informing me of the upgrade, but my download limit is unchanged (30 Gb).

Neil.

lol, we get so much crap on the BT email address we have (in the region of 100 or so an hour) that even BT's email address are flagged as Spam and deleted automatically by their filters.

we don't actually get any correspondence from them at all, and when asked if they could send any emails to my address, which is better controlled, they said that no system was in place to do this.

Ho Hum!
