Having no joy whatsoever on one of my SP2 machines (a laptop), Windows Movie Maker gets the furthest, but then says no tape is in.

Everything else says there is no capture devide...

I've tried the SP1 drivers, DirectX 9.0c, Media Player 10 and still not joy

Any cunning plans?

Ah, ok.

When the tape stops how much gets captured, in GB?
Is your laptop hard disk NTFS of Fat32, Fat32 can only take 4GB before stopping.

It won't capture anything, most applications say there isn't even a capture device present

NTFS formatted though, good old VMS like file system

Nah, Firewire, wouldn't even bother using USB for high bandwidth video work.

Works fine on my desktop though...

Right, next question - what are you trying to record it off of (device - camera, etc)

Its a Sony DCR-PC120E, MiniDV camera.

Can't see that being the issue though, as capturing from my desktop has never been a problem.

Seems to be a common fault, or at least temperamental.

According to those it could end up being anything from a reboot, to a change in connection method USB instead of Firewire. What is different between the Desktop & Laptop - Any updates you need to download from Microshaft for Movie Maker, is the desktop SP1 or SP2 patched?

That's exactly what I'm getting (same camera too).

Just tried it on my desktop and that won't work now, last time I used it was way before SP2 so I think that is the culprit.

Tried Ulead VideoStudio, Windows Movie Maker and MGI VideoWave and none of them work

Right...

Undocumented feature in MM2 (XP - SP2)...

>Tools>Options>Compatibility

You will see a list of codecs that are loaded when movie maker loads. Try excluding some of these codec filters. Pinnacle, Intervideo and some others are particularly notorious for interfering with MM2. You can always clear them all and then just go with the default windows codecs.

Give this a shot...

Spotted this on the MS site last night, but revised. On the laptop all were disabled and no joy, on the desktop InterVideo was enabled, disabled that, but no joy.

Don't have firewire on my Windows 2000 Servers alas, so can't double-check against them...

Right Tripps, sorry, you've stumped me. However, here is a good site to rummage through for general MM2 information. This guy knows his stuff:

OK I'm starting to get somewhere... Installed the SP1 FireWire drivers and rebooted to get a result from my desktop, but not from the laptop.

I've captured some footage of our youngest shortly after she was born and made a cheesy family video using Movie Maker - seems quite a good bit of software for simple putting together of footage, didn't bother with the other software (bundled with cameras) as its all so old now, and Pinnacle is on the way.

Now for the damn laptop

Thanks for your help folks
