Some Backing up Questions

[Pickled Piper]

I've just bought myself a Western Digital external hard drive for backing up purposes. I would appreciate some help on the following:-

Where should I store the hard drive? away from my PC so that they are not hit by lightning / flood at the same time? or does it not matter?

I want to back up from my PC and my laptop. Any advice on how to best do this? Do I just connec to the appropriate machine and press the backup button?

Thanks for any help.

I keep my backups at work... If you keep a lot of important personal stuff on your PC, what's going to happen if your house burns down?
