It always pays to look for the obvious things.

Recently I upgraded my firewall. At about that time the mouse started behaving very erratically, not moving, then jumping, failing to click etc.

A conflict? A hacker? Bear in mind this is a cordless mouse but with a ball... I clean the ball scrupulously. No better. Sticky cursor is driving me mad. It's not the batteries because when they go, they go instantly.

Today, after an exasperating session trying to order something online, I notice something is missing. The receiver, normally just behind the monitor, is not there.

Bastard thing had fallen down behind the desk. Put it back - perfect mouse

Just a true tale so all you experts can have a chuckle at my expense

Hehe.

I've done similar mate.

Rebuilt a machine. Slapped Suse on it. Couldn't get a network connection.

Spent 40 mins swearing at the TCP stack, before it occured to be to check I hadn't dislodged the cable when I moved the box to get at the CDROM.

Ah.....

Surely it's compulsory to have such an event at least once a year?

And once every 5 to 10 years you are supposed to have one that takes 3 days to work out and from which you never quite return to where you intended to be.

All part of the semi-expert to expert "It can't possibly be that so I will dive in at the slightly more complex level 2 analysis process first ..." methodology.

Or you spend over three hours going through various levels of BT tech support until you get to a fairly high level (i.e. one that knows what TCP/IP means and actually understands why I don't use their crappy routers - "no, I don't want to put it back on!"), we then both spend an hour (at £25 per hour) going through various DNS, TCP and other fairly complex stuff, until we then went riiiiiggggght back to basics, and I realised that when I had reconfigured the router after resetting it, that I'd missed a character off the ADSL login password.

DOH! Cue me and techy guy at BT closing the call with the following explanation and giggling: User failure.

Been fiddling with Java for a while.

Had my little bat file with the classpath and the like.

Kept getting an error, class not found in classpath.

Tried various types of directory syntax to specify where the Java panel was only to discover that I hadnt generated the class at all...

Developing some code to talk through a serial cable between two PCs. One PC on my left of my chair, the other to my right.

Spent at least half a day scratching my head and swearing profusely at the PC before I realised that I'd stretched my legs and caught the cable, pulling one end out of the back of one of the PCs.

Lesson learnt - always always always no matter what, screw in the connectors into the back of a PC.
