So now I'm looking for the best provider and a router.

I am currently with Tiscali (dial up). They are offering 1mb adsl for £15.99/month with a 2gb download max.
1. On average how many hours surfing would this be?
2. Are there any better deals around?

Ideally I would like an adsl router to connect 2 main computers with wireless access for my laptop. Additionally it would be nice if it had usb ports to connect 2 printers.
1. Can I get this?
2. What are the best deals around?

Personally I wouldnt look at capped services as after you have broadband for about a week you start to realise what you can do with it.

2gb is a lot of web pages and quite a lot of music but its only 3 full length movies...

I'm averaging about 1gb a day

I'm just migrating to a Freedom2Surf 2mb 50gb cap service for £24.99 a month.

You also get a static IP address which is useful for P2P stuff - just use a router to split the connection between your home PCs!

Check out www.adslguide.org for comparisons, opinions, ratings, etc. of the different ISPs.

What he said.

Forget capped stuff. You'll use your limit. Guaranteed. Then they get the big stick out and shaft you, mercilessly.

Go unmetered.

Wot he said. Good piece of kit and easy to use. If cabling around the house is a problem, Netgear also do some bundles which include a wireless network card or PCMCIA card.

Metronet, Pipex, Eclipse Internet or UKOnline.

I'm heading to Metronet once BT upgrade my line from 512 to 1Mbps, no regrade fee to pay then .

Forget capped services, in a day's normal surfing I managed to download ~1Gb, in the past month I've been downloading episodes of 24 & Alias (neither of which I can recieve on TV) and have past the 15GB mark in a matter of days never mind a week.

Is there any way of finding out how much I download on an average day at the moment?

You are currently on dialup so it will be fairly small.

If you hover over the little flashing computer in the system tray (bottom right) it will show you in bytes how much you have transferred during that connection session...

Go with www.eclipse.net.uk! They have a 512k speed with one month contract and uncapped downloads for £25 a month.

Or go for their 2mb speed for £40... You know you want to!

PS. www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk do a lot of hardware at excellent prices. It's where I bought my stuff from.
