Save As Problems.
Discussion
I have never come across this problem before and its driving me nuts.
Normally i could right click on a picture file on the net, choose Save As and save the file on my PC as a name that i want.
Can't do this anymore, when i right click, choose Save As and try to re-name the file, the file will save as an unknown file.
If i try to associate the file with Windows picture and fax viewer this will work once, but the checkbox to "Always use this program" is greyed out.
Anyone come across this before.
Thanks
dean

Don't know about that problem specifically, but clearing the internet cache often seems to help with this sort of problem, if that doesn't sort it then clean out the history and empty %temp% and the waste bin for good measure.

Sounds like its not putting the extension on the end of the filename for the appropriate file type.
If this is teaching you to suck eggs tell me to shut up
Windows only knows what type a file is by the three or four letter extension after the dot in the filename. As you say it comes up unknown file type it sounds like the extension is missing.
To view full filenames with extensions you need to adjust the file viewing settings.
Open My computer -> tools -> folder options -> view -> take the tick out of "Hide extensions for known file types.
Now browse to your file and see if it has the extension you expect eg .jpg for JPEG and .bmp for Bitmap etc
If it has an extension you should find its already associated with a default program.

Did this and the files don't have a extention.
What i don't understand is that when i save the file as is (with the name that it was given when uploaded) it will save on to the PC with the correct ext and will open.
If i change the name to anything else it doesn't save as a jpg (even though when saving the file the option to choose between .bmp and .jpg, .jpg is selected)

Most applications give you the recommended file name (such as untitled.jpg)
If you then change this to "mypic" it will save it as just that without the .jpg regardless of the filetype supplied.
The file is still a .jpg but windows does not recognise it as such.
The ways round this are to rename the file mypic.jpg or save it like that in the first place.

what i don't get though is that i could use to just save the file as a name that i wanted and not have to put the .jpg after the new name. Has MS released a patch so that this can't be done?
