Hi people

Anyone any idea what proportion of (UK) internet traffic still have an 800 x 600 setup?

I'm thinking that most 'puters for the past few years default to 1024 x 768 - so surely the 800 x 600 must be dying out??

(I'm asking as I'm trying to guage photo sizes on my web site)

Ta for any thoughts or info

Steve

A LOT!

Its the default setting for 9x and NT/2000

XP will try to be clever and set 1024 if it detects that it can.

Most businesses still develop to an 800x600 resolution.

Interesting, I was stunned by some reaearch I found a few years ago indicating lots of people are still using this resolution.

The number of times I've been round to someones house to *fix* their PC and found them with a 14 or 15 inch monitor running at this resloution is outstanding.

Nearly always they have no idea that you can run at a higher resolution and indeed a refresh rate higher than 60Hz.

Had a good friend visit me last night and he was utterly astounded that I run three monitors all at 1200x1024 and you could drag stuff off one onto the others!

Literally he'd never seen anything like it and it was way beyond his wildest dreams as to what a computer could do!

If you can get in touch with someone who runs a busy web site often the browser will tell server the resolution it is running in and this info can be logged.

based on the yahoo! provided stats from visitors to my web site -

Most popular browser visitors use 87.30% use MSIE 6.0

Most common screen resolution visitors have 43.70% have 1024x768

--

so, surprisingly to me, i guess some 50% are still at 800x600.

Or it could be that people use something else??

I am on 1280 x 768, I think that designing a website for your 1024 x 768 is the best idea.

yup, true - but, i think most pc users are still on surprisngly low res 800x600. need to cross-reference with platforms of visitors i guess to be sure - ie, some 8% of my visitors are apparently mac users so i am sure theyd NOT be at 800x600(!).

i want a new imac g5 almost as much as i want a morgan aero8 - what a sad man i am!

ps, resolved the "0" thing mystery - is a sort of true/false indicator for the a9.com toolbar - seems a daft way of managing its state. ah well.

IIRC the recent figures put it at somewhere around 40-45% running at 800x600 or thereabouts.

Don't make the mistake that screen resolution equals browser resolution

OK... spoon feed me trooper.. if they are on 800 x 600... I guess you mean the browser window will make it smaller? (ie about 780 x 550 ..) Or am I missing something?

Correct - the scroll bars, title bar, toolbars etc. take a bit of screen space.

Personally, many of our site logs show 1024x768 being most popular. As mentioned above, I think a lot of people keep running 800x600 because they don't know any better. And WinXP install will set to 1024x768 by default if it can.

Can anyone tell me where in the user agent string you get screen resolution from? Or do you need to specifically test for it somehow?

I mean that if someone is on 1280x1024, their browser window doesn't have to be full screen.

Probably a bit off-topic and sucking eggs time, but speaking as a web user and not a designer -

- don't plan for a full-screen web page. Most especially, don't resize the browser window for me.
- don't automatically load any image larger than about 320x240. Provide links to larger ones - several links to different sizes get lots of brownie points
- make sure the web page looks good at everything from 640x480 upwards, even if you have to scroll. Nothing worse than overlapping controls or not being able to read text as the pane has been squished too far.

The golden rule is that it's my desktop, my choice of window size and my choice of browser. If it doesn't display well, or (no. 1 sin of web design) tells me to install IE, I won't be coming back.

I use 800 x 600, mainly because I can't be bothered to adjust all the standard settings every time I build or install a peecee...
