I've managed to bugger up my wireless network
I have a desktop with a Belkin WRT54G router. It can't route though as my ADSL connection is USB and it hasn't got a USB port.
So, I had it set up to network the desktop and laptop and use Internet Connection Sharing to give the laptop access to the internet.
I've done something to bugger that up!
Diagnostics I've run so far.
- laptop can ping desktop
- desktop can ping laptop
- laptop can't ping internet sites
I can't remember if my network was set up in 'infrastructure' mode or 'ad hoc' mode. It's now in Infrastructure as that works (ad hoc doesn't seem to connect).
Can any experts shed any light on this?

I assume the PC with the direct ADSL connection can still access the internet?
Haven't used ad-hoc mode but as far as I understand it, it would enable two wireless adapters to connect directly to each other rather than going through the wireless access point (router). Since you have the router in there, infrastructure mode seems appropriate. Bi-directional pings seems to confirm the wireless side is working OK.
I would suspect the ICS isn't working. Not used it myself but as far as I understand it, it basically enables routing on the host and sets the host as the default gateway for the client. ipconfig/all on the client would show whether the host was still set as the default gateway. If that isn't it, hopefully somebody who knows what they're talking about will have spotted this thread by then.

My understanding is that DNS type operations are not being passed through from the desktop as required.

Yep, that's what I'm posting this from.
Looks like Internet Connection Sharing simply isn't working for some reason. The client machine can't do DNS type things or access the internet - hence the host isn't acting as a gateway.
I can find all sorts of stuff about configuring ICS online, but I can't find much on troubleshooting/diagnosis

nslookup on the client returns "Default Server Unknown/192.168.1.1"
Possibly silly question but have you tried re-booting one or both machines?
I don't use ICS but I do have a Wireless network of 4 machines (sometimes 6) on an ad-hoc basis and sometimes connections go 'missing' or a two way connection becomes a one way connection for a while.
I know ad-hoc is a bit of an odd ball compared with infrastructure but it is possible that some temporary record/file holding key data has become corrupt but will regenerate on re-boot. Desktop first if you boot both.
