grrrrrrrrrrrrr is it a virus?

My homepage keeps defaulting to it, and I can't get back to MSN homepage. Have tried spybot but no joy and it is driving me mad.

PS I am a technical numptie so be gentle!

Cheers,

You have a browser hijack. Sadly, the free ones like Spybot don't pick up all the nasty stuff. I subscribed to Spyware Doctor. Download the free trial and it will tell you what's lurking but you'll have to pay to remove it.

It may be something that's harder to find and you have to download a program called Hijack This and run it, save the result and post it on one of the computer forums like Tech Support Guy who helped rid me of a particularly nasty Elitum Searchmiracle browser hijacker that gave me a million pop-ups for good luck. It's too complicated to set out here but basically if you post on one of these forums, they'll tell you which of the Hijack This lines to remove.

I was at my wit's end but if you read some of the other posts, you soon pick up what to look for. Having removed it, Spyware Doctor immunises your computer against reinfection and for $20, it's well worth it.

Also try www.pchell.com for some of the other little feckers.

As stated "HijackThis" will work. However, a free download called "Adaware SE" is the $hit!! SE will punk "about blank" and others you never knew you had. Try it, you will not be disappointed. Further, upon wiping it out, disconnect your internet and empty your trash bin and caches then reconnect your internet. I found that if you do not do that, the "about blank" lurked in those places and was instantly back.

Just to add I had Adaware SE and Spybot and neither could handle the Elitum Searchmiracle hijack. Only two spotted it which was Spyware Doctor and one called Giant but in fact neither could remove it although Giant tried to stop it loading which is why Hijack This was such a godsend.
