Hi all you Computer experts,
My kids have a PC on which they have ‘lost’ the mouse pointer, don't know how but now when it starts up it uses the windows default desktop graphics settings (or safe mode) and there is no Mouse pointer, I have uninstalled/reinstalled the ‘Intellipoint’ mouse driver, using keyboard, and tried 3 different mouses (mice?) with no improvement.

The mouse is plugged into mouse connector on PC using a USB adaptor that was supplied with the mouse (Microsoft Optical Wheel mouse) and the mouse will work OK if connected to my laptop.

If I connect the mouse direct to USB then it does not even power up (USB not working?). It seems also that the PC is otherwise running slowly.

PC is a Dell 8100 Pentium4 (1.4ghz) running WindowsMe.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure if USB works when the PC boots in Safe mode.

Do you know why it is booting in Safe Mode? It sounds like there is an issue somewhere.

When you reboot the machine does it not give you the option of booting in the normal windows environment?

Correct it doesn't with ME

so you're real issue is why it boots in safe mode

Well, initially it booted into safe mode and when shut down it would then re-boot into SM again.

Now though it doesn't tell me I'm in safemode but it seems to have gone to basic graphics like safe mode but without the safe mode info (800x600 256 colour or something).

It doesn't give options for normal boot but when it's running the mouse 'lights up' so is powered from mouse plug (ps/2?) not tried a mouse other than ps/2 or USB (not got one).

The problem started after one of the kids loaded a 'demo' game from a cereal packet! have now uninstalled the game and now when starting up I get the error that the Anti-Virus (AVG) has been damaged.

But of course it is difficult to get into any programmes with no mouse.

Seems like I'm up sh1t creek without a paddle lucky it's the kids PC not mine (that's why I got them a seperate one).

It's not something simple such as the icon for the mouse pointer being changed or deleted?

'Fraid not, I don't know what's wrong, have just run it's recovery disks and it loaded everything inc Windows again but still the same. Funnily during the early stages of loading Windows the Mouse pointer was there and working but as soon as it started detecting hardware it disappeared again, never to return.

if you plug it in a different usb port, does windows pick it up as new hardware? and what then happens?

If your anti-virus prog is corrupted (Most likely a couple of required files have been deleted) then this is the cause of the problem.

Best solution (Other than to get rid of Win ME) is to re-install Windows. You do not need to re-format your hard drive or anything like that.

A quick fix that *might* work is to try re-installing your anti virus prog while in safe mode (Some AV progs will allow that, but not all) If that fails then uninstall the Anti Virus package in safe mode and see if Windows will then start up correctly.

What's the OS? If it's win9* boot up into command prompt only, use the F8 key just after post, then select the command prompt option. Type EDIT at the prompt look for system.ini(found in C:windows) when you open it up it should be command lines not full of symbols etc. The first line should be [BOOT], if it isn't delete everything before this line NOT after. Save and reboot, still not working? Then reboot to a command prompt "F8" and type SCANREG /RESTORE select an earlier date and run that should cure it. If it doesn't email me.

Thanks to all, It's now working.

In MSconfig the system.ini file was corrupted with some garbled rubbish and saved as System.ths

I copied the correct info from System.--- ? which seemed to be some kind of backup into the corrupted file and it worked again. I had to reload Graphics drivers and some other software which had problems.

Thanks again

edited to ask, am I now a PC Guru?
