Is there an accepted colour coding method for patching voice/data/servers etc? Or just whatever suits?

I have'nt done it for a while and a customer has asked me to come in and setup their newly flood wired building.

Dont think so, just different colours for different appliances makes things easier to see.

Nope, not really. I mostly see blue for PCs red for phones, green for servers and yellow for printers.

Pick a colour that you'll only ever use for _temporary_ connections in the machine room. Helps focus the mind on the bodges that need removing some time down the line.

And get uniquely numbered cables from a data cabling specialist, in 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 metre lengths. Record *all* patching in a spreadsheet. And if that gets out of date, you can audit cable ends (good YTS job that and throw some scripting magic at it to trace connections from end to end. Needs good cross/inter-rack patching though.

Get lots of cable management gadgets and use them religiously. Get extra protection for any fibre otherwise it'll get buggered by someone ham-fisted strapping a bit of cat 5 in place.

If you can, avoid any patching under the floor, that makes life hell.

If there's egg sucking there, I apologise. Current workplace has nightmare structured cabling.

Two sets of patch panels is always a good plan, so your switch doesn't get knackered by having things plugged in and out the whole time.

Only plan I saw was Grey for PC's, Blue for Telecoms, Green for printers, Yellow for Hub/Switch/router comms.

white/orange - orange - white/green - blue - white/blue - green - white/brown - brown.

This is the standard order. If you do it this way it will make it far easier for anyone else that does some work in the future.

If you do it your own way, one of these days you'll have some know it all cabling guy sucking air through his teeth, frowning and asking who did the work for you as they ought to be shot .....

hope this helps :-)

Probably not, as they're not talking about the cores...

no chance, I'm famously bad at it .....

Buying them made up always turns out 20 times cheaper than paying me for the time it takes me to do them !

I must admit, at the new place where I now work, they used grey for PC's and Yellow for Phones.

I found some green for firewalls and an odd orange for something weird.

Seeing as my favourite colour is purple, I'm replacing cables as I go with purple for pc's, and when we get a new phone system, hmm let me see...

I feel like red today...

Edited to add: How gay do I sound?
