I am just about to finish building a rally car and am looking for design ideas. Hoping someone on here would like to help out. The new car is currently completely white and I am looking at getting it partially wrapped to keep costs down (it will get bashed fairly often!) I was thinking of using the traditional BMW M colours of light blue, dark blue and red keeping the majority of the car white, but using the M colours in a more original way than just traditional stripes. I'm intending to fully wrap the front bumper and partially wrap the rest of the car. The new car looks identical to my current one which is below:

I don't have great photos of the new one yet, but here are some other angles in case helpful:

My initial thought was to use some sort of lightning effect in M colours but not sure this will work on a white background. Thanks in advance if anyone is up for it...

Thanks for the links, the second pic is a good example of what I'm trying to get away from, the first is much more like it, much more modern in my opinion. The only issue is that I need my sponsors logos to stand out and I think it may be a bit too busy..?

I'm hoping to spend around £600 - hence the thought of a partial rather than full wrap, unless a wrapping company is prepared to subsidise the cost in return for having their name on the car too? I also need to bear in mind that the car does get damaged fairly regularly so don't want a wrap which is too expensive to replace...

Sorry can't be too much help except to say I still think the original E30 M3 motorsport colours look great so perhaps some variation on that theme which would still allow you to keep most of the car white.

Maybe have the stripes a bit thinner and going over the roof of the car vertically rather than at a diagonal?

What I do want to know is more details about your car. It looks like the body-shell is from a 3 series compact except the proportions look different\wrong. What is it? what engine etc? Really interested to know more as I think it looks fantastic.

Very good laugh I know it is cheeky to ask, but think some people like a little project like this to get their teeth into. No idea if this is the correct forum on PH to find the Photoshoppers though? Any other suggestions?

Thanks, the car is the 4th BMW M3 compact that I've had built. I use them for tarmac rallying across the southern half of the UK and have done since 2006. The cars are fitted with 'F2000' bodykits designed for a European rally series. The spec of the new car is below (sorry it goes on for a bit!):

BMW E36 Compact LHD shell, fully seam welded, fitted with WRC style full roll cage - to front and rear strut tops etc...
F2000 wide arch kit with tubbed rear arches, E46 style front bumper and high level rear wing, carbon/fibreglass bonnet, fibreglass rear hatch
Lightweight headlights and tail lights
Turretted rear end
Race battery
Twin fuel pumps
Custom motorsport loom
Bespoke semi space frame rear (original axle, arms, beam etc all removed) custom front arms, ARB, engine mounts, sump guard etc...
Proflex suspension with remote canisters all round
Huge 6 pot AP brakes up front with Alcon touring car rear brakes
Full race S50 M3 engine (JE race pistons, steel rods, Cat cams etc) with 3.2 head and sump
Geoff Steel carbon airbox
Full bespoke DTA engine management
Drenth sequential 6 speed box
Custom made air powered paddle shift
Custom stainless side exit exhaust
Corbeau seats, Nicky Grist harnesses
Electric plumbed in extinguishers
Vertical hydraulic custom hand brake
Carbon dash board
XP digital dash
8x18 Team Dynamics Pro Race wheels
Lexan windows all round with vents and sliders

The new car should be ready for an MOT within two weeks, first event in this one is planned for 20th November at Bovington military test area in Dorset. It uses the same drivetrain as my previous car (the red one in the photos) and does about 50mph in first gear, topping out at 130mph in 6th. It is a bit of a beastie to drive and the paddleshift really transformed it driving

I hope to take one or possibly both cars to the Goodwood breakfast club on 6th November if you anyone wants to pop along to see them:

It doesn't have the wide arches, but there is a BMW Compact in Forza Motorsport 6 in one of the DLC packs. I (or anyone else with FM6 if they wanted) could set up a white one with 18" wheels and a bodykit and it would look close enough.

Then play with the paint shop in Forza to get some ideas. Are the sponsors the same as the red car? (Afon House, Radcliffe & Co., Brooks Macdonald)?

The base car in Forza. Splitter and wing, black 18" Pro Race wheels and big brakes, rollcage. That's as close as a Forza car is going to get to what you've got.

I'm hoping that any suggested designs will be free! I am budgetting around £600 for a partial wrap - I don't want a full wrap as the car does get damaged fairly often skimming past chicanes etc (and every now and again I do more than skim something...) I intend to leave most of the car white but use the traditional BMW M colours in a modern way, I was originally thinking of lightning strikes in the M colours, or maybe a modern design using the M stripes... Looking for suggestions ideally from someone who has the technical ability I lack to make it come to life using photoshop or possibly Forza as someone has suggested... Thanks

I haven't got the time to knock anything up, however, If I was you I would look to the BMW Batmobile as inspiration i.e. nice thick M stripes following the contours of the car with the roof wrapped blue to match.

Once you have an idea, a decent wrap company should draw the plans up, guy I use gives me scaled plans of vehicles before he starts wrapping, very impressive!

By the sounds of things the cars going to get a hard life... Constant damage repair. A really nice full wrap wont last long.

Perhaps small patches of vinyl in BMW colours to create a dazzle/distraction camo effect... Would be cheap as chips to get a few meters of each colour. And easy to repair. Crap knock up in powerpoint but you get the idea

I think the problem with that would be getting the sponsors to "stand out" in the foreground.

How about something like this:-

With the blobs in a lightly saturated blue/red with stronger blue/red outlines?

Brilliant spec stuff...
Thanks for that spec, that sounds awesome. I've always had a feeling the BMW Compact could be made into a right weapon, seems I was right, great effort! thumbup

If you can afford pay for the wrap, you can afford to pay for the design.
I wasn't expecting a professional designer to give up their time for free, but I'm sure there are talented amateurs who have the skills to help - I've seen some very good Photoshopping on other posts and hoped some fellow PHers may like to rise to this challenge. The ideas posted above in the photos are great examples of what I was hoping for. Any other ideas appreciated...

Thanks that's really good, not what I had in mind but I like it. I do agree with the comments about the sponsors logos possibly getting lost in the design but something along these lines but a bit less 'busy' could work...
