Amazon Fire 6 and cheap VR headset for an 8 year old

So - somewhat at a loss for what to get my 8 year old for Christmas one idea I've had is to get him a Fire 6 tablet and one of those cheap VR headset things.

I realise they're a world away from the proper PS4/Occulus stuff but bearing in mind he is only 8, I think that won't be an issue at all.

The reason for this post really was to ask whether there is enough content out there to keep him occupied. Are there many games that will work on the Fire 6 (assuming I also buy one of those bluetooth controller things/the headset comes with one)? Is the Fire6 good enough for him? I'm thinking that it's the largest size tablet that appears to fit in these headsets hence focussing on the 6.

That said, are there any "better" tablets out there up to 6" (but possibly smaller) for the price of the Fire6 (circa £60)?

i'm not sure many or any of the VR headsets would fit that. There are phones that height but rarely that width and the screen resolution may be horribly low. there's a world of stuff available on cardboard though.

I'd get him the Kids Kindle and forget about VR it will likely be a poor experience and therefore a waste of money.

Also, VR isn't really recommended for the youngsters, I think Oculus recommend 13(minimum) Sony recommend 12, and Vive isn't clear although I originally read 7.

However, the reasoning seems a little vague and possibly risk averse. I'm not really convinced it will be a psychological issue but there is some evidence that it could damage physical development, focus etc.

I have a lot of experience with VR (Dk1, DK2, Vive and PSVR) and I do let my kids (5 and 7) use them but only under strict supervision and then for only 5minutes at a stretch. Even as an adult an hour is about the max I can take and I still get a bit of vr sickness.

I think I'll go back to the drawing board. To be honest, I had reservations about whether it was really a good idea anyway.
