A 'homepage' or index page is just the front page of a website. It sounds like your service provider (BT) has given you some webspace. If you want, you can design a website and put it in that space.
You will need:
1) Web authoring software - I use MS FrontPage because I can work it (and if you're OK at MS Word so can you)
2) A way to get the web from you PC to the space - this is called FTP - Frontpage has this facility although I use a programme called CuteFTP.
But how interested are you?

Well, I like the idea of posting a UK part of familly info-page which would contain a fair few photo's and some notes in a diary form probably, which might be accessed in US/AUS by others. someone told me BT, might offer what you mentioned, and if its free, then that might be handy.
would it be able to accept replies/notes from visitors, and would it be easy to operate, cheers.

If you want to keep things simple, like me, the easiest thing to do, IMHO, is have a hyperlink to an e-mail address.

So, you have a bit that says (for example): 'If you want to say hello please send me an e-mail' - and the word 'e-mail' is hyperlinked so it appears underlined and when people click on it, their e-mail programme opens with a new message window already addressed to you. Ta-da!

There are more complicated ways of doing things such as forms but I've never figured out how to do them. If you want to compile a list of messages that everyone can see, I just copy and paste their text into another page and update it as required, eg this one: www.autograph.uk.com/San%20Juan/reviews.htm

If you wnat anything fancier than that you'll have to try someone else!

I would avoid placing your email address on your site unless you want to be absolutely flooded with spam.

Spam companies send bots out to harvest email addresses off of unsuspecting web sites.

Wise words re; spam think i need something more to think about, than a load of un-solicited tripe.
No i've seent the page from other people, that features pics of car/dog/kids & camper van,and I want some of that
I shall call it Richard.com, and make a few million like Ted

Your're right: even if the address is only in the source code it can still be found. However I've had my e-mail address in several sites for 3+ years and spam is not a big deal. In fact, I got none until I joined a Yahoo Group - so I think that's the culprit. I now run Mailwasher 2 before checking mail and get maybe 10-15 spams a day. I'd suggest you try that or similar anyway, as deleting spam at the server also stops most viruses before they get to your PC.

There are ways to hide your address from spambots - I think forms are one - but that's a step beyond me.

Best bet would be to use an online gallery program. This will make it really easy to upload photos to your site.

An example would be Nuggs' gallery here:

Looked at Nuggs site, have a query, can a short movie be included, as can a bit of text.
there would be little of any interest to casual observer, so would there be any benefit in making it some kind of secure site

Secure sights are possible but are a bit of a and I'm not too sure how to do it.

It's doable... but generally needs more complex coding than say just normal html (normal website language).

One of the more experienced designers will know

Just don't make the website url public and you shouldn't have too many problems

Short movies and text - fine.

Although its easier to just put a link to the video on the webpage.

Website can appear daunting to make but in reality they're quite simple.

The fact you can use an internet forum and email fine, i assume you can write a document in WORD and you're willing to learn means you shouldn't have a problem at all

I made www.phea.co.uk in not very long; it has links to videos too. Simple but it does the job.
However I think it's time you started experimenting because your shipping list is getting complicated!

The hoon section on that seems easilly accesible, I'm sure I could get to grips with that, what typically is a monthly cost?

If you make and upload the pages yourself and use your free BT webspace, it's free.

I pay about £40pa for my own chunk of cyberspace because I use it for work and other clients, and if you pay for space, it's more likely to be reliable. However for a family site that's not so important I think.

Yeah I think as you say, a Fam/site would not need to be so flash, and in any case pictures of my dog swimming in nearby stream, are available from me for the price of a stamp anyway, if anyones interested!

So wont' be needing a vid function just yet i suppose
