So, I've now got great BT infinity speeds, but I get an really rubbish router to go with it.
Had hassle with it dropping connection for the last few days, BT are sending me another, but reading up on the issues online, would suggest the router is rubbish.

Happy to bit the bullet and pay up to £100, any suggestions?

My current wall socket looks like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/GENUINE-BT-Openreach-Inte...

So I think I need an ADSL/VDSL compatible one. I was thinking Netgear AC1600 looks OK from the Amazon reviews and I could have it tomorrow if I order in the next 4 hours....

I need to have something for Christmas if not the kids will not be happy when Santa delivers an Xbox One and no wi fi...

You need a router with a VDSL modem

e.g. http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=14436.0

Changed mine for a netgear D7000, it has a built in vdsl modem, I ditched the white openreach doohicky and plug in direct from the wall socket that has a filter built in. Works with BT Tv as well.

Edit. It is 2ghz and 5 ghz

I had the smart hub and it was rubbish, the wireless would stop working every day and require a reboot.

Got an Archer VR600 a month ago and had no problems since.

It was £74.99 a while ago so keep watching and hopefully it will drop after Christmas

Just realised you wanted it before Christmas so you have probably already ordered. Whatever you buy, it will be a better than the BT hub.

Really grateful for all the suggestions, thank you.

BT have put (another) one by courier to me yesterday afternoon, which is arriving today.
Typically the existing one started working again yesterday at 5pm and has been faultless which will hopefully mean it might hang on for a few more days over Christmas.

Then I'll keep an eye in the sales for one of the items above, potentially an Archer v600 as it would be within budget.

I'll be upgrading to BT Superfast broadband in the new year and will undoubtedly be receiving a Smart Hub. What's the issue with these routers as I haven't found poor review of them anywhere else

Seems to be quite a few unhappy people out there. "Smart hub BT issues" into Google throws a 17 page discussion thread on it:

If you happen to have BT TV, you need to make sure your replacement router can handle the slightly weird IP multicast setup that they use, or you won't get any internet telly.

Do the same VDSL recommendations apply for Plusnet fibre 76mb with the freebie Technicolor TG582n router I'm currently using? Other than better internet stuff, I'd like to have a USB drive plugged into it that I can access from a Mac to add/remove files and access from other stuff like Kodi, phone, PC.

My existing router hasn't played up again since I posted.
I've now got 2, the existing one in situ plus a brand new boxed one.

Is it worth trying to sell it or should I just send it back?

If it's a hub 6 they seem to go over £40 on eBay

Bumping an old thread rather than kicking off a new one.

Can anyone expand on the above? (for a simpleton!)

Look for something to replace my home hub with..

I chased around various forums looking for routers that worked with BT TV. The one I mention further up does. Funnily enough, one forum was the BT Community forum
https://community.bt.com/t5/YouView-Boxes/Using-a-...

Bit old now though?

Not sure where I picked up on mine. A Netgear D7000. Think mine needed on small set up adjustment out the box and it was up and running, broadband name or something. Have a smart Tv on it with a Netflix app running ok. BT UHD and it runs sweet as a nut. UHD is superb. All channels and no issues with iPads etc. And computer commented as long as it is not a heavy download on the computer.

Get whatever choice from where you can return and replace it in case it does not work?
