bios/ disk size limit issues and im stuck!
Discussion
can anyone help? ive got a venerable old p2 system with boosted ram that i run XP on and use as a file server and id like to update its HDD to make it more useful. it currenly runs a 4 gig as its c drive and a 13 gig as its data drive but ive got an 80 gig drive that id like to sling in and use for the data storage. the trouble is that the machine crashes on detection of the disk - a problem that i rekon is due to the bios.
What ive done therefore is to download up to date bios that has large disk support and to run bios flashers that are compatible with AMI bios to transfer the data.
The trouble im having is that, although everything SEEMS to work and the machine restarts itself, on reboot the bios codes are precisely the same on the boot screen and the problem remains.
Has it been flashed or not? can i tell? if so, any ideas why it still fails on the detection of my new drive?
any help would be great - im really tearing my hair on this one!
oh - its an MSI mobo and ive tried thier live update but that doesnt work either

yyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssss!!!
it works!
whew. thanks for the offers of help guys, it was a trial, but in the end i used uniflash and a patched version of award bios that thankfully seems to have worked with my ami bios chip. what a palaver tho!
really, really delighted to have it all working ok.
interestingly uniflash is the only flashing tool that seems to actually work, awflash, amiflash msi's own tools, all failed. two thumbs up for uniflash then!
thanks again for the offers of support, im off to have a beer and then to bed!
oh - FYI arcturus incase you're curious, it was an msi ms-6147 board running ami bios a614701 v1.1b1 083195.
these bioses have catchy names havent they
