I'm just messing with a new website, and I've uploaded my index page, after deleting the index page used to initiate the domain on the server.

However, typing in the domain name just brings up the parent directory with list of files - I know this is a common mistake but I can't remember how to rectify it. Can anyone tell me please?

default index page names are index.htm, index.html - is this what you have named your files?

Failing that, what are you looking at when you see the file listing - is your file there?

Let us know the website, and we can diagnose it (via Email if you want to keep it hush!)

The home page is index.htm, and I was asked to load it into a directory already created called "web".

The website is www.refresh.gb.com and I've posted up a mock-up home page just to test the site.

Feel free to rummage!

Bloody hell, plotloss, is that all it was?!

Thanks everyone, it seems to be working now.

Anyone know how to set up e-mail forwarding?

How do you mean email forwarding?

So you can have enquiries@doodah.com type stuff?

Yes - so people can send e-mail via an address on the website, and it gets sent on to my home e-mail.

Oh, hang on - let me first check that I actually bought the e-mail forwarding package

It will all be setup via your ISP, there will be an option in your account if you went for email forwarding.

There are some free scripts on the ISP website for generating messaging pages, so I'll try to set that up first and see what happens.

Ahh you mean Forms based mail.

Yep thats pretty easy, there are programs out there that will generate the lot for you.

If you run into any problems give me a shout I did a fairly simple one for 'er indoors website and you are more than welcome to the code...

I've uploaded the FormMail, but clicking submit results in an "Acess denied" screen. Any ideas Matt?

Do you have the path to formmail in unix format?

As in usr/nubbin/bin rather than www.domainname.com/formmail etc?

I imagine if its been 'uploaded' it will be a permissions error, formmail needs to have +x permissions in order to execute.

Nubbin, do you have shell access to your webspace (or is it with your ISP etc)

Formmail is also notoriously buggy, allowing users to both SPAM thru your website, AND Hack your website. I would strongly advise you rename the formmail.pl / formmail.cgi to a different name if you plan to leave it public facing.

I think I've set the permissions correctly, following the online tutorial at Namesco. It asks for permissions to be set to 755 which gives the correct "flags" when viewed through my FTP.

The entire proces is driven by the ISP, and they have apparently modified the Formmail to reduce the spamming possibilities.

I've e-mailed the help desk, so hopefully they will tell me what an idiot I am, and sort it out.

(I'm operating on the ragged edge of my ability and knowledge here!)

755 is ok, so long as the 7 is the correct owner (should be if you've ftpd it up)

you should check the apache Error logs (if you have access) as this will give a better idea as to the cause of the issue.

have you uploaded the file into your cgi-bin folder?

Helpdesk is probably the easiest option

Enjoy.
