Motherboard on the latest PC I'm tinkering with has a PCI-E x16 graphics card.. A couple of PCI slots… and a PCI-E x1 slot…

What (if anything!) uses PCI-E x1 …?!?!

Graphics cards use the PCI-E x16 slot... not the x1 slot...

It will be for the equivalent PCIe cards when they start appearing on the market.

PCI is a dying standard so manufacturers wont make PCI cards for much longer. NIC's, Modems and the like dont need the massive capability of a x16 controller so they put the ports in using PCIe x1 for manufacturing reasons and the fact that they will become the standard of the future.

Its just the industry moving to a new standard and the fact that PCIe even at x1 is MUCH thicker than PCI

OK cool... thanks for the info.

PCIe graphics card seems pretty swift though... mmm...

The gigabit network adapter is out, I think this uses x1 http://games.dlink.com/products/?pid=406

PCI Express replaces PCI, with even X1 being twice as fast as PCI.
X16 is used for graphics cards, and twice as fast as AGP.

* PCI 132 MB/s

* AGP 8X 2,100 MB/s

* PCI Express 1x 250 [500]* MB/s

* PCI Express 2x 500 [1000]* MB/s

* PCI Express 4x 1000 [2000]* MB/s

* PCI Express 8x 2000 [4000]* MB/s

* PCI Express 16x 4000 [8000]* MB/s

* PCI Express 32x 8000 [16000]* MB/s

* IDE (ATA100) 100 MB/s

* IDE (ATA133) 133 MB/s

* SATA 150 MB/s

* Gigabit Ethernet 125 MB/s

* IEEE1394B [firewire] 100 MB/s

er.. thanks, I think. I KNOW what speed they run at, the theoretical maximums etc etc... I merely want to know what hardware is available for the PCI-E x1 slot... not a lecture on how the PCI-E standard works!

I've just built myself a new system for work which included an NVIDIA based 6800 Ultra PCIe card and it's blazing fast...

...Of course it also includes 2 XEON Nocona 3.6ghz processors, the "Tumwater" chipset and 4GB of RAM...

So we have a gigabit LAN card for the PCI-e x1…. Anything else…?

I don't suppose anything useful uses it… like a sound card….?

Yes, but it does allow me to render my videos during "downtime" at work

This is the board:

Quite a nice piece of kit. Asus needs to publicise thier workstation/server boards more as they are all quite good.
