...I have BT broadband, but the computer room/study upstairs is unfortunately NOT the room which has the BT phone socket. Due to layout, it won't be possible to run an extension lead to the study.

What hardware do I need to (wirelessly) get BB access from the study? And will this compromise connection speeds?

Thanks in advance for any info!

get over to www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk for some advice. That's where I found out what I needed, ended up getting a Linksys router and gubbins.

If you've already got a bband modem, you'll just need a wireless access point to plug that into, and a wireless card for the back of the pc.

Depending on your computer/network layout, you either need a Netgear DG834G or a Netgear WG602 downstairs and in your computer you need a Netgear WG511 (laptop) or WG311 (Desktop).

And no, there will be no speed compromise. Wireless network is usually much faster than Broadband. (Depending on your broadband speed and local wireless propogation conditions of course)

Just realised, if you've got the bband phone socket in another room to the pc, you won't be able to use your existing modem.
Instead you need a wireless router, that includes a bband modem + an access point

Another thumbs up for the DG834G, I've got one powering my BTBroadband and works fine.

BT do a package that contains a wireless router (Voyager 2100) a laptop card and a PCI card for the desktop machine. I think it was £99, or you can buy the bits seperatley. I've found the good thing about this is, if u need to phone BT if there is a problem, they don't tell you they can't help if you are using their hardware.
