One pc game will play, other won't?
Discussion
Ok,just built a PC for my mother's friend, she has two games for it,need for speed underground(for her husband) and that thingy that you have to build a theme park(for her daughter),so basically both games need the same PC requirements, video card etc,but the need for speed needs a slightly faster cd rom than the other games, the theme park game plays perfectly,so miffed husband is wondering why in thew hell the need for speed isn't playing? So am i!What happens is that the FMV at the start plays,no problem,if you press enter to get into the start screen/options etc all the text is just big blocks? No letters at all!Anyone any ideas? The game plays pefectly on my mothers PC(similar specs)All drivers etc up to date.Any help appreciated.
I've come across this problem before and I know the answer but I can't for the life of me remember what it was exactly. I had it in HL2 when it was texture size, but unless you really have a pants g'card and very little memory that shouldn't be an issue.
Make sure you've got the latest drivers for the g'card & the latest patch for NFS:U.

Specs are 256mb system memory, nvidia tnt2 32mb graphics card,1200mhz amd processor. It says to disable any firewalls/antiviruses etc while playing it but it still wont work?i thought it was a duff cd too but it played on other pc fine. All drivers are up to date and latest direct x is installed.
NFSU runs 'OK' on my elderly PC. It's an ancient p3-500, but it does have 640MB memory with a GeForce 3 64MB video card. I strongly suspect the video card is where the problem is in this setup (although system memory is a bit on the low side too). TNT cards are 2 generations older then even my elderly card. It may be possible to get it running, but in a game like this I suspect it would be unplayable. You can get a 64MB card for £20 (avoid the GeForce MX range) but another £10 would see the memory double, and give you a useful chunk of performance.

NFS:U 1 was Geforce 2 minimum too.
The in game renderer works on a TNT 2 after a fashion, but it's really slow and probably not worth doing. As you've found out, the text doesn't work in the front end at all... At the time of release there was no known solution for this, maybe Nvidia have fixed their drivers by now but it's unlikely, can't see them spending any time on the TNT 2 these days.
You can get a (new) Radeon 9250 for around £30, or try and get hold of a Geforce card or older Radeon second hand... would have to be peanuts / free to beat the 9250 though.
