I've got a Targus one that I bought a few years ago. Wasn't very expensive, but it's been utterly brilliant and is still in perfect nick despite being used every single day.

It's not physically big, but pretty much all the compartments on it have lots of expansion room, to the point that if I'm spending up to a week away in a hotel on business I can fit not only my laptop in there, but a weeks' worth of clothes too.

I used to have a SwissGear rucksack for commuting with laptop, and it basically fell apart within 6 months of getting it.

Did a bit of research and although particularly popular with cyclists, I ended up with an Osprey one very much like this.

It gets quite a lot of abuse, but has been absolutely excellent - had it 2 years and counting now.

I had a Samsonite one. Killed it in 3 years (straps went ste).

Now had a North Face one for the last 2 years or so. It's like new still more or less (with being used every day). Definitely recommend.

Also had a good run with JanSport ones - had one for 10 years and only got shot as it was blue in colour rather than black and a bit covered in crap from 10 years of heavy use!

Been tempted by Tumi as have seen excellent reviews, but they're not cheap!

I've got a North Face Borealis, it's got a laptop sleeve in the main compartment, it fits my 15" laptop in fine so yours would fit perfectly. plenty of other pockets, compartments etc.

I have a North Face Jester Backpack, £40 on Amazon.

Plenty of storage for diary, pens, ext. Water bottle fits in the side pockets. Looks good and has ventilation on the back.

The shoulder straps connect on the front too. That might help alleviate back pain?

Agreed - my DAKINE laptop backpack is still going strong after 5 years of daily abuse carrying laptop, accessories, lunch and gym kit.

I have this Wenger one I've been impressed with:
Wenger 600634 SURGE 16" Laptop Backpack , Padded laptop compartment with iPad/Tablet / eReader Pocket in Black {21 Litres} https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01260J944/ref=cm_sw_r...

I have a 13" laptop too and I'm on my second one of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wenger-600638-Backpack-Pr...

Another Wenger, sized for a 17" screen but it's still a normal backpack size and it's so useful to have more space - at a pinch I've taken a weekend's worth of clothes and flown with this as my only (hand) luggage.

It's a pretty durable unit, my first one lasted 10 years and god knows how many thousand miles of travelling, hundreds of flights etc.
When it finally needed replacement I didn't even look at anything else.
