Hi folks
Running out of space continually on 500Mb PS4. Looking to upgrade to 2Tb ....which from google / You tube seems something even I can achieve.

So what's the best / best value for money memory upgrade for this and where to buy ?

I definitely want one that fits in the current chassis so I think that limits the options to something <9.5mm thick. There seems to be quite a difference in price between different ones. Which should I go for and why ? I want it to give at least same performance as the original one in terms of speed / noise etc.

Thanks

Hi

I did this at the start of the year and i used this drive https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01LXRWWB6/ref...

It is straight forward, you will need a thumb drive as well to load the OS on and make sure all your games are backed up to the cloud.

EDIT: I noticed no difference in speed or noise in my PS4

Thanks. Anyone got other options worth exploring before I dive in ?

Can't you just plug in an external drive now?

Yep, you can plug in a USB3 external hard drive , and then under the settings is a section for external storage that will set it up to be used as extra storage (which is not the same as a memory upgrade you mentioned in the title BTW) smile, this is easier and a lot less faffing about then changing the internal hard drive

Is the factory 500GB a SSD? If so wouldn't that 2TB be significantly slower?

No its a 5400RPM drive, I replaced mine with a 2TB 7200RPM drive and it seems little bit quicker with loading/boot times but nothing to get excited about. There's quite a few videos on Youtube comparing different types of drives and performance.

Thanks folks. Yes I was aware I can plug in an external, but I already have enough "boxes" under the TV so wanted to go for a neater option and it doesn't look too difficult to do. I've gone for the drive originally linked in first reply. I'll update the thread for future use with how easy it was.

Well, that was pretty simple. The hardest part is figuring out what & how to save beforehand and getting the right file for the system reconfig which caused me a couple of wobbly moments (there are 2 system software downloads which is not clear at the beginning. You need the one closer to 800mB, not the 300mB one).

In terms of saving, I made sure that all the game data was downloaded to the cloud as belt and braces, then did a system backup onto a USB stick (user game data only). This took a while, even though it was only <4Gb. Swapped the hard drive, reconfigured the system software (you download it from a computer as above ..the 900Mb one !)...then restore and all our data, galleries, user setup etc was back

Actually swapping the drive is very easy. Now I'm downloading all the games back from disc or library which take a while. Gives about 1.7 Tb of capacity with a 2Tb drive.

If you are thinking of doing this, it's simple.
