Why are the letters on the left of the keyboard??
Discussion
Stupid question, but seriously. With the letters on the left and the numbers on the right, either the mouse has to sit way to the right, or the letters are way to the left. If the letters were on the right side, then both the letters and the mouse would fit in front of the screen and I wouldn't have to lean over to reach them.
My guess is the keyboard was around before the mouse was invented, so it didn't matter; but then why didn't they change once when the plastic rodent came out?
I think the qwerty keyboard was laid out in such a way that the old style *hit the page hard* typewriters didn't get their *letter-makers* all tangled up in the middle .. it forces you to type in a way, and the typewrtires letter-makers moved in such a way that prevents multiple pile-ups on the carriage. if you see what i mean.
joospeed is right, when they made the original type writers they found that letter arms were hitting each other, so they devised a system wherein all the common letters were on opposite sides.
The qwerty keyboard isn't the best, there are a few others with one specificially for PDA's and the like (f something).
As for the num pad been on the right hand side - most people are right handed and would type the numbers using only one hand - their right.

Out of interest why are the letters on the left of the keys? and not in the middle??
Looked at 3 keyboards and they are all the same.
Off to make myself a coffee now!
The letters on my PowerBook are in the middle.
Thats because its and Apple and therefore has to be different. It also means Mr Jobs gets more money when the letters wear off.
