How do I find out the domain name for a range of IP addresses? For example if I have the first two segments of the IP address 999.999.*.* is there a web tool I can use to find out what domain name that belongs to?

I’ve found tools that will resolve the name for a complete IP address but not a range of them.

Thanks BlairOut. Couldn’t find a tool on the web page but there was a link to some freeware called SmartWhois which I downloaded. Trouble is that says the domain range is owned by “Internet Assigned Numbers Authority”. Which is odd because I’m currently connected to an IP address in that range. So unless IANA has gone into the ISP business something is amiss.

If you have direct access to a DNS Server external to you, then NSLOOKUP should serve, if they have done the PTR thing, that is. Alternatively, try http:// and a company website may tell you.

if you want to find out who owns a block of IPs, you will need to perform a Ripe / Arin / etc lookup on the IP.

If you paste the IP here, or just mail me via profile, I will happily let you know.
