I'm about to reinstall XP (Pro) onto a PC with a pair of SATA drives… and no floppy…

Now I seem to recall that although the PC will boot from CD, when it comes to the installation of the SATA drivers (having pressed F6) the Pc will only allow the installation of the drivers from the floppy drive… is this correct? - or can I burn them to CD..?

TIA.

I think you can access the CD from the F6 screen as the HAL and simple drivers have already gone on by that point.

Give it a go, only costs about 20p to find out...

It's the timeliness issue... either leave the customer struggling, but working... or kill the system only to find that their system is dead until a FDD arrives...

Ah well... there goes the customer service..

The copying files stage is after the F6 screen as well.

So boot from CD, see if you can read the SATA CD when you hit F6.

If not, reboot and all is well.

Ah, good point.

Would be kinda ironic if SATA relied on FDD technology to operate...

if you want to get into the repair console you still need to boot off cd and have the drivers for SATA onboard...

AFAIK it only works with a FD mind, but then I know only what I need to know in these matters .

Not bothered about repair console, we're after a clean install…

sorry, my point was that getting to the repair console requires the use of third party drivers - if you can get that to read from a CD, you can install XP using the drivers from a CD

You will only be able to access a floppy drive via the F6 prompt, as has been stated, so this doesn't help you unless you have a USB floppy drive and a BIOS that supports it.

What you're looking to do is often tied up with what's called "slipstreaming" of service packs (SP1/SP2) onto an install CD.

Basically, do a quick google search for "slipstream sata drivers" and follow one of the umpteen guides out there. You will need a CD writer, something like Nero, plus the Microsoft Deployment Tools (downloadable from MS for free).

(The boot image for Windows XP SP1 works for making a SP2 slipstreamed CD, by the way, should you end up asking yourself this question - the deployment tools for SP2 are not easy to get from MS, whereas the earlier version is easily acquired)

Couldn't be bothered with the hassle in the end, so acquired a FDD.

Without slipstreaming, you have to use the FDD to load the drivers - it wont let you use a CD.

XP is due a refresh in the very near future (unless it's already out!).. which will include SATA drivers.

I couldn't get SATA drivers to load from CD, or via USB FDD... so had to resort to IDE FDD...
