Does anyone know I can save a .dot file as a .doc and then re-open it in Word as a doc. I've tried loadsa obvious stuff but when I do a "Save As" it only allows me to save it as .dot even if I'd changed it to doc in Explorer (before opening in Word).

cheers

Copy the file in Windows explorer

Open a DOS box

Navigate to the folder and type:

rename [filename].dot [filename].doc

That sounds like the actions of the old MS Macro virii that were around a long time ago.

Have you disabled 'macro protection' on you Office suite?

Unfortunately I can't try it now I'm home but is that different from changing it in Explorer?

I hope it's not a virus as it's on a works PC and is in approx 100 .dots. I'm assuming that their virus protection is pretty good but maybe wrong

I dont think you have a virus, so breath gently!!

Have you got the show file extensions turned on for known file types within your file manager?

Whenever you go to save a dot file it will automatically save it to the template directory, you can change the file type at the bottom.

If you are worried about viruses, press Alt F11 that will bring up the VBA editor, you can see if there are any macros contained within the Normal.dot

Also check to see if there are any addins? these will be contained under tools.

You can always email me if you are still having problems

What they said, and if it's not got much formatting in it, just copy the text into notepad and then paste it back into a fresh document..... et voila

Intersting. If I want to dump formatting I copy and paste via a new message in OE!

Thanks

The problem is that when I do a "save as" with a .dot open somehow all other formats are turned off with just .dot showing and available. It doesn't do it on my home Pc so wondering how they've done it.

Thanks all for the other suggestions, my next move was to copy and paste into a new doc but that was my last resort as there's loadsa other properties etc set for the dots and still approx 35 docs to convert.

Why not just create a new document using your .dot file as the template and then save the new document?

That's what I thought, but it look slike loading the .dot file is disabling the option to save as .doc. Am I right?

Yep that's correct but if I open a new blank document and copy all from the dot and then paste I can save as a doc. The only problem is it doesn't pick up the properties set for the original template file.

What I meant was:

* File -> New
* Select your template (.dot) from the document types listed
* Save the document

I didn't mean File -> Open on the template (.dot)
