Google Search engine Ranking
Discussion
Hi,
I have been allocated the task of making sure that the business website has the best ranking amongst the top search engines Google, MSN, yahoo and altavista. I have included meta tags and given images alt attributes. Does anyone know any good tips and tricks for getting a higher rank in the search engines. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

Basically you can forget meta tags ever existed with google. It will only index what the eye can see.
You need as many good quality inbound links as you can. Start by going into the Yahoo directory and the DMOZ directory.
Here's some reading for you:
Link 1
Link 2
The second site makes excellent reading.

As Laurence said, inbound links are important. In my experience, clean code and decent content are also key.
I feature higher on Google under the search 'Nike sponsored athlete' than people like Lance Armstrong, Paula Radcliffe or Tiger Woods. Similarly, if you search for 'Motivational speaker' and click on 'pages from the UK', I feature higher than most speaking agencies.
The reason for this is that I don't try to trick Google - I just write about what I do. The website you're trying to promote should be well coded, standards-based html or xhtml with the styling and content separated. If it's full of table and font tags, Google's bots will have a harder time making sense of it.

As mentioned content and links are key. I have a PR6 site which I built up simply by making sure each page talks fairly indepth about a certain subject and then submitted my site in every free directory I could find. I hope your company bosses don't expect to see results straight away as it takes a while.
BTW it's probably better you tell them sooner rather than later that it is next to impossible to get top Search rankings and keep them. Not even the SEO (search engine optimisation) companies will guarantee to do this as Google et all keep changing the algorithms involved.

Spot on. 100% agree with this.
One helpful "trick" (and it's not a trick as such so Google doesn't think its malicious) is to make sure you update the content frequently. Google detects the differences on it's scans and realises that frequently updated sites are often a lot more use to readers than ones which aren't!

Eveything that's been said so far, plus:
Correct (semantic) use of html tags is also essential. Use <h1> or <h2> tags instead of <font size="150%"> or similar. Use <strong> and <em> in place of <b> and <i>. Use good textual content, and remember that artificially trying to increase your site's page rank is likely to have quite the opposite effect. Good naming of urls is important too - as are correct and appropriate titles for pages. Use of frames at all will have a negative effect on your page rank too, as will using javascript onclick events for links instead of the correct html <a href> tags. Meta tags are actually not that important.
