Yes - I know what the general concensus is towards it!

But, on the other side, I have been running it successfully for several years.

It's been busy popping up the odd alert and catching a few dubious e-mails and generally doing what it's supposed to.

The latest version also did a good job in combating some adaware stuff too.

This morning, it's had a real fit though!

First it decided to keep telling me that liveupdate was trying to access the internet and would I like to block it. Then it would only run part of the update before crashing with a warning about something in a gibberish which I've been able to translate as the firewall is preventing it from continuing. It also suggested that Windoze Firewall is turned on (which I distinctly remember disabling when I set this machine up) - sure enough on checking the Security Centre "Computer Says..." Firewall ON. Yet when I go into "Manage Settings" it shows it as being OFF.

Now I know you can all give a rousing chant of "I TOLD YOU SO". But I'm looking for any ideas you might have.

Yesterday I ran a Micosh!te Windoze update. I'm guessing that this has a default to turn security back on as a 1984 directive from Big Brother Bill. But any ideas over the conflicting ON/OFF Windoze Firewall?

(Usual procedure such as re-booting, running AV check and am about to turn the clock back to a previous restore point and start over - that's quite a handy one, innit?)

Uninstall Norton Firewall and let the Windows firewall do it's job. I realize that Norton gives you some good marketing guff about how much better it is than the Windows firewall, but try this:

1. Unistall Norton firewall
2. Enable the Windows Firewall
3. Go to the Symantec site
4. Run thier "Security Check" applet

The result will be that it says you are protected and have no worries.

Conclusion, if even thier own "Security Check" says you are ok, then you are ok.

Unistalling the Norton Firewall will make your life less hectic, even if you keep AV and Norton anti-spam (I am assuming that you are running the integrated suite)

Cheers
