I'm thick as sh*t when it comes to PC's, but I'm after one for home use. It will be my first home computer believe it or not as I only have access through work at the moment.

So what should I be looking for? I like to spend my time on the net, the girlfriend likes copy music CDs etc, but that's about it.

I want to stick to an all in budget of cheap (definitely under £1k). So what can you recommend I look out for, and where can I get it from?

Cheers
Rob

What do you want to do with it?

Net/Surfing
Email
Games
Business Apps
Media view

etc

£1000 should get you more than enough machine but depending on what you want it for you could get this figure down to around £500 all in including a TFT.

I've recently picked up 3 Dell base units for £210 each in the last 2 weeks.

Spec isn't bleeding-edge, but it's fast enough for web, word processing, etc.

They were all Dimension 3000 units with 512mb RAM, 80-gb HD and Celeron 2.66ghz processors.

The only thing it doesn't come with is a monitor.

e.g. £241 for a basic model which you can specify up slightly and still come in below £500 http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dimen_2400?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

Or you can go for a much better machine e.g. http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=305&l=en&oc=D04845&s=dhs&sbc=dimen_8400 and still come out with change from £500
