Sky Q + iPhone 8 WiFi issues
Discussion
Hi all,
Wondering if anyone else is having the same issue?
Whenever I move from one room in my house to another, my WiFi appears to drop out. I have to toggle the WiFi on/off to get it back working again..
Happens every time.. getting frustrating. I have hard reset my phone, reset router, reset network settings.. cannot figure it out.. Seems it only did this since IOS11. Happens to the wife who has an iPhone 6S.
On Sky Q you have those mini Q boxes which act as routers, wondering whether that is impacting as it connecting to them when I leave one room into another..
Any ideas?
Thanks
G

My initial thought was on the handoff between the access points for your iPhones (this would be 802.11r probably but not sure on the Sky Q implementation). Sounds like something is screwed between the client and AP on the handover. Have you tried sky forums or similar to see if others are having issues?
On enterprise gear there tends to be a separate set of best practices for handling IOS devices as they can be fussy to get features like this working well - does it work ok with other devices? Laptops/android phones etc?

Don't disable the 5GHz or your Sky Q will throw a fit.
What I'd suggest is unticking the option 'Synchronise 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks' tick box and click apply. Then back on that page, rename the 2.4GHz by adding 2.4 onto the end of the SSID and apply again. Then connect your devices to the 2.4Ghz network.

Judging by the problems that others have here, I would change providers:

The issue with roaming is that access points can only do so much. It's down to the client to want to change at the end of the day. Access points tend to try and force their hand by making the closest one as favourable as possible however some clients still refuse to budge until they completely drop out of range.
Mobiles seen to be the worst from this aspect. How do other devices behave? Laptop etc?

This is often the culprit. Iphones are awful for trying to remain connected to a single access point and remaining on 5GHz even if the signal is very poor. Turning Wi-Fi off then on again will often make it connect to the closest access point again.Mobiles seen to be the worst from this aspect. How do other devices behave? Laptop etc?

Laptop is no problem, probably because I have it in a fixed place and does not move around and stays connected all day, when I work from home. The inconvenience of WiFi on/off is a first world problem in the grand scheme of things, just a bit annoying.. Just wish Sky would get this into their lab and find a permanent fix..Mobiles seen to be the worst from this aspect. How do other devices behave? Laptop etc?

Have you 'forgotten' one of the WiFi SSIDs in the settings? Even though you have split and renamed the two frequencies, if they are remembered in the iPhone it may still try and roam.
I suggest forgetting the 2.4ghz SSID so the iPhone is forced on to 5Ghz.
More likely the other way round. 5GHz effective range is less than 2.4Ghz.I suggest forgetting the 2.4ghz SSID so the iPhone is forced on to 5Ghz.
I had the same problem with my old TP-link router, all of my devices have problems with it, when I was moving inside the house I have to reconnect from time to time, and that happens with my iPhone and my iPad. To be honest, I solved this issue, but I had to buy a new router, because the problem was in my old router. To cut it short, I bought a new router and I had to setup, and I have never done this before. I spend a lot of time doing this because I had no idea how to do it. I searched on the internet how can I fix this issue of mine, and I found this article https://www.router-reset.com/ip/192-168-0-1 where was all the necessary information how can I setup my router for a better Internet connection
