My mother seems to be getting quite a few unwanted sales type calls on her mobile, she asks them to stop calling and blocks the number and then a week later they call back from a different number!

It made me wonder why all numbers are not blocked by default if they aren't on your contact list or don't have permission to call you.

In my mind the way it would work would be that if you called someone you would just get a message saying your call can't go through but press 1 and a message will be sent telling the recipient who you are and asking to take you off the blocked sender list.

Silly idea?

Install an app like TrueCaller. Far easier.

Tell her to try not to get wound up about it. Don't listen to any sales talk. Just say no and hang up.

Repeat:- "Just say no and hang up".

You could run an iPhone in ‘do no distrub’ Mode permenantly, and set it to allow calls from contacts or a favourites list.

She would miss so many calls from people that she would like to speak to.

As soon as she realises that it is a sales call (or any unwanted caller), just hang up.

That would actually work, but she isn't on an iPhone frown does it work in android?

Definitely this. TrueCaller is excellent. Most of the time it tells you who's calling, and if it's a cold caller someone has usually reported it before so the call is flagged as spam and you don't have to answer it. It frequently identifies callers even if they're not spammers, too. So it's handy for when people call that you don't want to speak to, you just pretend to be out. wink

My S7 has the Whitepages database installed in it's dialler - it shows up stuff like 'sales/marketing', 'possible scam' etc when certain numbers come up. I assume TrueCaller does the same thing.

It's also freaked out a few people who called me for the first time (for business) and it's identified them, even though I don't have their telephone number

Occasionally it may stop calls from callers with whom you wish to converse.

When you realise that it is a sales, or other unwanted call, just hang up.

You don't have to install anything. Just hang up.

My S7 has started doing this after a recent update, it's a brilliant feature.

My mother in law got a Bt cordless phone where the person calling had to state their name then the phone rang and she got chance to hear the name and accept or reject the call, can't remember what it was called though sorry.

The first thing that i think when i encounter one of those phones with that feature is that they are elderly and a bit feeble. I don't think that is an image that Mum should give out.

It would work if she added all her contacts to "Favourites"

Register your numbers at the Telephone Preference Service http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html

I've done both my landline and mobile numbers, also did my mother's, we get very few cold calls now, just the odd one from abroad, unfortunately the TPS can't stop those.

Whilst you're about it register your address at the Mail Preference Service https://www.mpsonline.org.uk

Stops a lot of junk mail, I did this for my mum, she was getting inundated with charity junk, it's now reduced a lot.

What happens when the hospital ring on 'number withheld'? That's what they do round here.

Perhaps you are not old or feeble, but it may give that impression to callers.

Seeing as they don’t get through what difference would it make ?
