Suppose for example someone wanted to log onto a web page to make amendments to it without leaving a trace of exactly who did it, how would this be done. I asume you would access it through a mirror so they log that IP address rather than your own.

Just interested it got me thinking how all these hackers do it.

It's reasonably easy to obfuscate a trail by going through compromised hosts & proxies.
There are some scripts you can run once in a compromised host which will fill the standard logs with random chars.
The longer the path to the compromised site, the harder it is to track (but more links to go wrong). Pinching someones ISP account get's rid of the need for some of the links but the ISP may hand over their info to the rozzers.

Most use a series of http proxies or just use a compromised host.

Depends what you want to do but I'd say the easiest thing to do would be to go to a net cafe or use an open WIFI connection, break all ties (bar cctv of course)
