Has anyone got a YouView box please and if so how do you find it especially if you've come from Sky?

I'm paying Sky £80/month for a Plus box with HD and all the channels.

With my current ISP I can get a YouView box for a fiver a month and I think I can add Sky Movies to it for a tenner a month through an inbuilt Now TV app.

£15/month sounds a lot better than £80/month albeit without Sky Sports which I'm still looking into.

We do, was the cheapest way to a Freeview recorder (bought the box off ebay), it's the smaller one but before they went 4k.

All works fine with no subscriptions, I don't pay for anything from BT. Performance on Netflix, iPlayer and the other catchup services is fine so no reason to believe it wouldn't be for live streamed stuff too.

Only thing I've seen on Sky+ boxes that it doesn't do is downloading stuff to watch later (which I guess is handy if your internet isn't that quick). Otherwise nothing I'm missing.

I've just picked up a BT 4000 UHD box from ebay & the user interface is shockingly bad. As an example it's not possible to re-order the channels in the list as it's fixed to display in channel number order. Youview say they have no plans to change this. It's going back on to ebay & at least I won't lose much. Have a read here:

https://community.youview.com/youview/discussion/4...

It's possible that some of the non-BT Humax boxes may have different software but they don't come up quite so often on ebay.

I’m experimenting with YouView+ box
You can watch Sky Movies via the NowTv app as you say.
But you can’t watch the 6 or so Sky Live channels on the YouView NowTv app

But you can on the NowTv app on my Tv or the cheapest NowTv box

Mental - means I need 2 remotes etc

Yes I'd like to be able to not have to juggle too many remotes.

Odd thing is I seldom use the "plus" features of Sky Plus.

I keep coming back to £15/month but it's amazing how Sky Sports seems be a bloody monopoly so far as platform frown

i’m sure you can get Sky Sports pass for NowTv
Not sure if it would work on the YouView NowTv app though!

No apparently it won't which is a bit st.

It might be I call Sky to cancel and they offer a storming deal I'd probably stay with them, but want to be damned sure there's a path out if they call my bluff smile

Can you play your own media on these? Through an app like Plex or Kodi for example, or just using the unit as a player?

Annoying
But you can get You view for the main channels
NowTv box for £15 or so, which allows sports & the 6ish Sky Channels which YouView currently block on their NowTv app
So you still get all - except 2 remotes !

Not sure which YouView box you'd get but I had the Humax DTR-T2000 YouView box and it is a far better product than the crappy Virgin thing I've got now. Better hardware, better interface.

A good YouView box with NowTV / Prime / Netflix is I think the best solution these days.

I have the smaller BT Youview box. The remote is poor, the central button cluster is crowded, I'm always pressing the wrong buttons, the Sky remote is still one of the best out there.

I also find the Youview EPG annoying, the fact you don't get a 'preview window' in channel guide, or any programme info, you have to press the 'i' button each time, pain when you're channel hopping. IIRC the previous firmware version was better for this.

I have both Sky and BT Youview, I always use the Sky box as my first choice.

I have a youview box and hate it.

The interface is rubbish and it did finally has to be restarted.

You can't get sky sports in the now tv app and half the channels are "an additional subscription"

At my other property I used to have sky and swapped for freesat which is infintely better and use a nowtvbox for sky sports, and netflix for movies.

Saves me a fortune e

Swapped to bttv a couple of years ago because of the cost of sky. Remote annoyed me so bought a logitech. Epg is rubbish compared to sky. Now TV app doesn't work for live sports do bought a now TV Box.
Most of the stuff we watch is via Netflix, prime or kodi (mostly American stuff that isn't showing here) so not swapping back anytime soon.
It'll get used more when wsb, moto gp and f1 starts.

Starting to realise how much I bloody hate Sky as they really do have the best "one stop shop" that I can see biggrin

Now TV has a massively limited set of channels on the basic box, Smart Box has Freeview I believe.

YouView has better channels but no Sky Sports

Throw all the channels in on Now TV and you're at around the same price as just buying Sky Q plus with Sky you can watch it all online.

Anyone used TVPlayer?

Bt and sky will be sharing channels soon, may extend to other youview suppliers?

Hmm... I suspect not all YouView boxes are equal.

I bought mine independently rather than as a customer of BT or TalkTalk and it was excellent. I didn't get any additional channels in the guide so that sounds like an upselling gift from a supplier (I get that now from Virgin and it pisses me off).

I don't know how the YouView could be any simpler. You find what you want to watch in the guide from any time in the last week or so and press play, and it plays.

That said, the onboard third-party apps like Netflix and NowTV weren't brilliant, I tended to use the Chromecast for those.

I got mine for £40 from Facebook Marketplace complete with two homeplugs and its this model Amazon Link

Onboard apps are crap and I'd avoid but these days if you've got a console or a modern TV the apps on either are suitable replacements... That aside I don't have any complaints myself with the interface and the search tool works well, I only tend to really use it with series record and then fast forward through all the adverts.. A good alternative to All4 / ITV player which force adverts....
