We're running about 45-50 servers all Dell. I'm after a centralised package for a reasonable price that will monitor them and let us know if anything is about to fail etc. For a reasonable price ! Any suggestions.

I've spent the last 10 years working with HP Openview, Unicenter NSM, BMC Patrol etc - all of which can do this very effectively.

However they are not cheap, it depends what kind of stuff is running on these servers and how much downtime you can live with.

If you search google for freeware monitoring tools there are a lot out there but we've had experience with Big Brother;

www.bb4.org/

and it works pretty well. They have a freeware and professional version, have a look.

I'd second that. I've used BB and it seems to be OK.

Does openManage to alerts these days?

One thing with BMC is that it's an awful lot of work to set up and maintain. We've got 2 people working full time on it, monitoring 400 servers.

Microsoft Operations Manager is a good product for Monitoring Windows Servers, it's quite easy to install and Dell provide a management pack for it.

We use MOM 2000 and MOM 2005 extensively, it does the job though again won't be cheap across a 40-50 server estate.

Nagios - www.nagios.org. You'll need a linux box to run the software itself on, but it'll monitor just about anything.
