Electric skateboard - Tesla batteries

I've been considering getting an electric skateboard/longboard for some time now, I used to skate when younger and enjoyed just cruising around rather than attempting any tricks!

Having looked at some that are available just now the options seem almost endless, ranging from more budget models to some pretty pricey options and even many custom builds available with forums dedicated to it.

Since it would be my first try with it I don't want to spend too much and wandered if anyone had any experience with them?

There are a few I have looked at recently but I like the look of the Ownboard W1S or Meepo V2 with the 'Sanyo for Tesla' batteries for max distance

Anyone have any experience of these or similar? (The two mentioned seem pretty much identical really)

I found some old threads about electric skateboards, but nothing recent so thought I would start a new one, unsure if this is the correct place to put the thread but technically its an EV...

I had considered an all terrain version but couldn't see many cheaper options which looked very good, so if anyone has tips for this then please let me know. Evolve GTX AT looks great, but it costs 1800 euros!

Yeah I have heard they are good quality, but also pretty pricey compared with the ones I have looked at. I'm sure they are better quality overall, but don't want to spend so much on the first board in case I don't really use it so much.

I will for sure be wearing all the safety gear on it! I already have an elbow held together with metal from a cycling incident...

I thought Tesla got their batteries from Panasonic?
Do you need insurance for using these on the roads? 25mph would put it in the realm of having a licence as well.

You don't 'need' anything because they're illegal to use on the highway (in the UK).
So you takes your chances etc etc.

Yeah I was dubious about it, but quick google showed Panasonic bought a controlling share of Sanyo (Which apparently is the biggest producer of lithium ion batteries according to the article below.) The tesla batteries are just thousands of small almost AA type batteries chained together in packs, so its likely just using the same type on a much smaller scale.

Not sure about UK rules for riding these on the road as electric vehicles like this are pretty restricted, but here in Austria they seem more common, you can ride a segway with no issue for example, they do tours on them around the city and you often see groups of tourists cruising around.

Yeah they are exspensive alright ! but it does seem that many cheaper boards break easily , components fail & the availability of spares and the level of customer support is questionable at best . After going through all that , you then end up buying a Boosted Board anyway ! So it's cheaper to buy the quality product from the start . Boosted stuff just works good and keeps working with minimal maintenance needed & if you have any issues the the spares are easily available & the customer support is bang on . And apart from all that , the board just rides soooo good . Its a addictive thing .

A guy I used to work with a few years ago showed up to a work do on one of these last week. I can confirm, they are absolutely epic. He commutes 7 miles each way on his, and has been doing it for the best part of a year. Charges at home, then charges at work. It has 12 mile range.

He rides it wearing a bike helmet, it does indeed do 25 mph, has regen braking and he hasn’t killed himself yet. He has done occasional “fast dismounts” where you come off the board and start running....

I had a go on low power ... and it was terrifying.

I am sure they are better quality, as with most things you get what you pay for usually, so appreciate they would be better overall, but the reviews I've been reading/watching of things like the ownboard seem pretty good overall and parts seem readily available direct from their websites as well, so this doesn't concern me much.
Although I do like the boosted boards, if I was going to spend more I think I would be more tempted with the Evolve GTX all terrain, looks like it would be good fun on forest tracks etc too, surprised boosted haven't made something similar yet? Suppose you could maybe get some larger wheels and swap them over pretty easily anyway?

What kind of range/speeds do you get out of yours?

I thought this was a good review of the ownboard and the battery range (He gets an impressive 34.62 km in cold weather!) and its also in Vienna along the Danube island, where I would likely take mine a lot, there are so many nice and smooth cycle paths all around the city and along the danube here

I was considering a Evolve board , but a lot of riders have been hurt when the remote randomly cuts out , uncontrollable acceleration or full wheel lock up seems to be the order of the day . Lots of info about the issues on various electric skate forums . I talked to a guy on a Evolve earlier this year , he's just started riding it again after experiencing this cut out . He had a very bad stack , surgery & now has many metal pins installed ! Brave to get on it again .... Evolve have redesigned the remote , but people are still reporting getting hurt when it goes out of control . The batterys are also reported to have bad voltage sag issues when they get down to 50 % charge . Also problems getting replacement parts and poor customer service are frequently mentioned . Shame , it's a nice looking piece of kit , but too much of a potential widow maker for me to gamble on .

Thanks for the info, I hadn't heard about any of that, although I hadn't actually looked into them much due to the price and not wanting to spend so much, given how expensive they are I'm surprised they have that kind of issues!

Already have an elbow made up from pins/plates so probably not the best idea getting one of these
