amy Recommendations for simple to use home cloud storage devices? I have an iPhone and iPad and my partner has an iPhone and MacBook. I also have an old HDD full of photos that I would like to make available through the drive. I don’t have a lot to spend and id like it to be as simple to use as possible too. Any thoughts?

Just don't put your more "personal" pictures on there.

If your abode is Mac abundant - then iCloud really is the best option.

Resurrecting this thread rather than start a new one. Currently torn between a NAS and cloud storage for my files now ive moved to a new place. I have a subscription to icloud but there doesnt appear to be a way of downloading whole folders if you want to. Is there a cloud storage solution from someone reputable that allows you to store and manage files in the way that is natural on a computer and not require you to download individual files at a time? If you were going to go for a NAS instead, i dont need media server or anything like that , just file access from anywhere which is the most cost effective solution? I dont need much space 1TB backed up to a second drive would be enough

I prefer Google Cloud to iCloud, just personal choice but I find it easier to use on my iphone (plus you can use sheets/docs/slides easier).

Having read a couple of horror stories of apple/Microsoft/Google just removing someone's access to their data, I just use freenas on a cheap HP NL40 and back up once a month. All the files, photos, work stuff is too important for hosting provider to turn around and delete all my files of 20 years...

Microsoft OneDrive works just like files and folders on your PC. You can download folders all in one go.

Also heard.stories of accounts being banned because robot algorithms detect something they don't like, and it's hard / impossible to get them back. So I'd always back up locally as well.

As for easy and simple, take a look at WD MyCloud. I had one for a while and it was easy to use. It didnt meet my media server requirements so I changed to a Nas but as you don't need that, it may do everything you want.

When I right click a folder/file in iCloud Drive (on Windows) I have the option 'Always keep on this device'. Is that what you're after?

There's an 'offline' option, doesn't that just download the whole folder?

You setup the sync to PC, then select which folders to sync and I think you can set it up not to sync any of the files too, so they only sync the first time you try to open them locally. It's pretty good for giving you the choice of access to everything and not filling your PC with files you don't ever use.

Personally I think the best approach is to use an online storage option, then sync it locally and then backup the sync. Either PC-> Server, or Server-> PC, both are easy enough to setup.
