Has anyone else had this problem?

I've recently built a new PC, and installed XP SP2, all the Windows updates, then a few of my apps (Norton Internet Security, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Office etc...)

Then annoyingly, whenever I used IE, it would lock up within minutes, and consume 100% of a CPU. Killing the process in Task Manager wouldn't do anything and I'd have to physically power off the box.

I then formatted the HDD, and re-installed XP SP1, Norton and Photoshop, and everything worked fine.

After a few days, I started to re-install the remaing apps, and the problem started happening again after I installed the latest version of JRE. I uninstalled it, and tried a few older versions, but they all caused the same lockup.

My XP laptop which has all the same apps installed runs perfectly.

A bit of googling has shown that plenty of other people have had the same problem (with other browsers including Firefox too), but no one has found a solution.

Any ideas?

Hi Ehasler,

I have seen this problem on many machines.

Open the command prompt in Windows (start->run->cmd-> ) and type the following.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

This is the only fix I have seen for it, fixes about 85% of machines, the others we chuck in a skip.

The Cynic in me waves my finger at Norton.

Its the only one that will activly fiddle with t'internet side of things.

Popup Stoppers / Personal firewalls / Ad Blockers used to be the biggest cause of grief for me (back when I used them!) now, I just use a hardware firewall at home, jobs a goodun!

Could be totally wrong

Hi Jamie,

I have seen lots of these problems. It appears to be some wierd bug in J2RE. The machines at work don't use any type of pop-up blockers/personal firewalls/ad blockers etc and they have suffered this problems. I have also been to customer sites where they have all of those things installed as well and seen the problem a couple of times.

Just in case your curious we googled it at work a while back and found the fix here.

Thanks Lee,

Just tried your suggestion, and so far it looks like it's working! You can't believe how much and you've saved me!
