Not the most exciting of topics, but my Mrs' phone is on it's way out, it's a Nexus 5. I've got a 5X I'm happy with and they can be had in decent condition used for about £150. Though I did have a bootloop issue replaced under warranty.
I've also seen you can get a new Nokia 5 for about that price.
Not yet looked into the Samsung alternatives.

Wondered what people's suggestions were?

It's mainly used for Instagram, bit of browsing, word games. So doesn't have to be mega-fancy, just do the basics well and have a reasonable camera. To that end that's why she likes the Nexus she has as it's got no bloatware, but it is noticeably slowing down nowadays.

I've been using OnePlus phones for the last couple of years.

Excelent value for money.

How about a Nokia 6.1 from Tobydeals? 4Gb/64Gb, Android One (no bloat). Good build quality. Around £165

I'm looking at exactly the same thing at the moment for SWMBO. Not much interesting under £150, but £150-200 brings in a few more choices. She's focussing on photo capabilities.

Nokia 6.1, Sony XA1, Moto G5+ or Honor 9 Lite are the direction I'm leaning, but I'm open to suggestions. I don't want to order from outside Europe - there's some very dodgy-looking suppliers, mostly in HK, that have my antennae wobbling - TobyDeals and eGlobalCentral are the main two (or one?), but there's others. LokeTD also look seriously hooky, but nearly got me.

With so little internet use I would be really tempted to go back to an old style phone and text only phone.Spent years tied to a Blackberry that I had to do emails from 24/7 that I would welcome the peace.

Dunno about the motoG.

Had one which was fairly cheap (I don’t do expensive phones) and it kept not recognising my memory card. Tried new cards, formatted correctly and after a few weeks same problem.

Pain in the arse as 8gb isn’t that big and once you add a few apps you’ve reached your limit.

Was a common problem when trying to find a solution. frown

Are pictures important to you?

The nexus 5 has a camera that punches above its weight and still does no doubt so bear that in mind.

And, on the Nexus thought, is this another one of those suppliers...?

Thanks for that, I've been looking at a Nokia 6.1 to replace an ageing Nexus 5x.

£200 from CPW, if you also don't much fancy the HK online boys.

Anybody got good experiences with them?

With CPW or the online stores?

Not in the UK, but all of my online purchases in Oz from HK have been trouble free. Used to order a lot from them due to the A$1000 GST free allowance on personal imports, cameras, laptops, phones, not an issue.

Never dealt with CPW.

Sorry, the HK onlines - specifically Toby, eGlobalCentral and now Bonanza. They're the ones I keep coming up with.

I had very similar problems with a Moto X Play - wouldn't recognise the memory card and broke 3 times in 15 months ownership!
I replaced it with an LG G4 which has been pretty good - bought almost new for about £150 but that was some time ago.

For my wife I bought a Currys ebay shop refurb / guaranteed Samsung Galaxy S6 - it was just over £200 but I imagine these may be well inside your price range and a superb phone.

I think buying an older top of the range phone can work really well in terms of camera quality, speed and ease of use.

I have a Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 8 (work and personal). 6.1 has been a great phone, Nice feel in the hand no obvious SW bugs as yet and no unrequired apps at the start. I give it some hammer and it has handled it well (unlike my previous Samsung)

Has the 8 got anything that you'd miss in the 6.1?

I've still got a Nokia 6500c, though half the networks it works on have been switched off it will probably outlast me.

Car phone warehouse were a bunch of lying, robbing aholes in my experience. I'd rather chop off my cock than give them another penny of my money.

I used a Moto G5 until about 6 months ago when it started acting out due to some oddball update, I was leaving for England at the time and had to get a phone in a hurry so I bought a Nokia 6.1.

The Nokia is a nice phone, well built and as others said, uses Android 8.1. However there's a cost to using the generic OS in that the camera keeps crashing up when you try to take a picture. Sometimes it requires several restarts. This is turning into a deal breaker for me as i've lost the moment on a number of occasions. It's dual sim which is great but I'll probably go back to Motorola once I get back from England next week.

Thanks
