I am looking at mounting my phone in the car, so that I can answer calls hands-free.

Perhaps something like this-

Any better ideas? It looks as though I will have to buy a plate to go inside the phone holder.

Yes, they're great, but 7dayshop.com are doing two of them for less than a fiver at the moment. They come complete with a selection of plates.

If it's just answer calls, rather than make them, you can get devices that allow you to keep your phone in your pocket.

I've got a cheap one in my car. I bought it about 8 years ago just to see if I liked it before spending considerably more on something a bit flash. But it's everything I want. I've forgotten the name of the model. I'm out in the car in a couple of minutes. I'll post the model when I get back.

That's the one (or two...). I stick the plate to the phone case rather than the phone itself. Works well, but I lose about two a month forgetting to take them out of cars I have delivered. banghead

There's a similar one with a clamp instead of a magnet, goes by the name 'Kenu'.

In my experience the push-in type are poor & the clamp type work much better. Sadly the one I have is not in stock but there are are others on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B072M7SQQQ

You might have to search a bit though.

The thing to look out for is the bit which attaches to the vent. I have this one which is excellent, but the ‘fingers’ clamping on to the vent will give way we’ll before the magnet holding the phone does (and there are cheaper ones): https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00Z620MW8/ref=cm_sw_r...

I like the magnet versions though, fuss free, I just lob it on when getting in and grab it off when getting out.

Halford’s sell both types at a cost premium if you don’t want to wait for delivery or want to see them in real life.

This is the one I have, sticks to the dash instead of in a vent. First sticky pad failed after a while and I'd misplaced the spares kit that came supplied. I emailed the company and they sent me another out (with more spares than the original) F.O.C.

I agree the push in type fingers are pants (in my experience) but there are holders where the fingers clamp on to the vent & there is a magnet to hold the phone. These work much better as the holder is really firm in the vent.

I bought an Avantree bluetooth handsfree in car kit in 2012 for £13.94. The current model is twice the price and seems to have few extra features.

Mine can be voice actuated for outgoing calls, but I rarely use that feature, probably half a dozen times in 7 years.

The device is clipped to my sunvisor and is almost out of sight. I prefer it because I can keep my phone in my pocket and still receive and, occasionally, make calls. It's been criticised for poor tone but despite being deaf in one ear and the other has reduced hearing, I can understand it very clearly. My wife reckons that she can hear me well enough. I charge it once 'a month' when I do my fluid and tyre pressure checks and it's never run out on me.

I'd recommend it at £14 but there's a bigger choice at its current £21-£27 range on Amazon. I'm satisfied with my purchase, this despite the fact I bought it just to try, intending to go upmarket if it worked OK.

So there's nothing in the way of my outlets, so to speak.

12 month bump...

Getting bored of needing two hands to get my phone in and out of my vent mounts, and the vents in the mini don't work with vent mounts, I'm on the lookout for self adhesive magnet holder.

Any recommendations? Most of the links above are dead, the ones that do still work, how are they holding up?

After messing around with several solutions that did not work well, I purchased this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mpow-Windscreen-Anti-Shak...

The long arm is a mailable Aluminium rod, so holds my phone without vibration. The extra little support is the icing on the cake. I have 3-cars that I want to use it in and I am confident this will be a universal solution.

If not the prettiest - that is the only downside. It holds the phone at a good level so you are not looking down, just across from the other instruments.

Brodit, there's nothing better imo. It's expensive but works great, without having to drill your dashboard. I can slide my phone in, one handed, and remove one handed and it's all very secure, with no risk of phone falling out.

I use one of these in the Zed - https://www.tetrax.com/en_GB/catalog/category/view...

I've glued the small magnet / disc on the back of the phone case and it works pretty well.

In my other car the vents are a bit funky, so i've got a mount that sits in the cupholder - works pretty well, and again, small magnet inside the case

What's the surface of your dash like? Mines textured (cheap plastic and I doubt would take a standard suction pad, but does that "sticky gell" pad stick to rougher surfaces?

Used to mount my Windows Phone like that using bluetack to run a cracked version of TomTom back in the day.
