I have approx 20 photos of A4 pages with normal text passages (no pictures, charts, diagrams etc)

Can I get the text from them into MS word documents? (into pdf is no good)

I have an andriod phone and a laptop with Windows 10+ word etc. I have no scanner/copier, cannot get access to one either.

Can I sort this out or will I have to type it all in?

One Note app is available for free in the Play Store smile

If you are stuck with search terms, Optical Character Recognition or OCR is what you are after.

Be aware its not magic, so you are well advised to check and correct once its done its thing into text. Still, better than typing 20 pages by hand.

Only way you will be able to do it is with some OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. In my experience it isn't very effective and the amount of time you spend going through it looking for errors would have been better spent just typing it up.

Rather than buying OCR software, get it typed by someone who can touch-type.

No, you'll need to type it out.

I've certainly never heard of anything that can do what you're looking for.

ETA. Have seen the above, i'll need to give that a go later as that would be a very useful tool!

get a free trial of adobe acrobat.

Get the images as high quality as you can and print them to PDF (If you can scan direct to PDF even better).

Use the OCR functionality to convert the image to text.

Copy and paste to word.

Make sure you proof read everything as OCR isn't perfect.

Absolutely outstanding. Thankyou!

I do have one note, never used it before but I will now!

I would if I knew anyone capable. I do not have a secretary sadly. I am a one finger typist!

Google Keep notes will do OCR so if you have an android phone you can do it from there.
Save photo on Keep, click on it, click the thre dots in top right, click grab image text.

For a good text only photo of type it is excellent.

For a job such as that of 20 pages there are good suggestions above.

I've to do this regularly, and it's usually for translation purposes. If it's only 1-2 pages I find it quicker to use my phone and paste it into whatever document I'm working on. There are loads of options to do it;

  • Google Keep - as suggested above.
  • OCR selection on the app multi-tasking panes of Android 9. By far the easiest and quickest way, this is what I use. It's baked into Android 9.x
  • Google Lens within Google Assistant - I tend not to do this, as it's still hit-and-miss to use.
  • Scan on your phone using G Photos, G Drive, OneDrive etc and print to PDF and do a copy 'n paste. Again, slower than the built-in OCR, but supplies you with a PDF copy of the document which you originally took the text from.

Doubt anyone is better at this than Google, Google Lens will do a pretty much perfect job.

I'd love to know how new posters/bots like the one who resurrected this thread land on a particular topic from years ago in order to make it the subject of their first post. It's hardly going to be the top of any search.

Sometimes I think it's a 70yo who's just been told how to use the internet. They did a search for something, got lost, found this and thought "Oh I know a good answer". With no concept that A) 2 years is ancient history in the modern world and B) their answer is close to useless.
