The folding phone have started to arrive.

The Royole FlexPailieve, only available in China.

Samsung Galaxy Fold

Huawei Mate X

and Xiaomi have teased a short video of a 2 fold phone. LG have revealed a 2 screen phone, so not really a folding phone.

Out of the 3 that have had official launches Royole, Samsung and Huawei, I think the Samsung and Huawei look the best options.

Out of those 2 I like the the Huawei the best, nice design, keeping the camera(s) to one area, so that when the phone is unfolded you have the full screen available, no notches, tear drops, hole pinches etc to break up the screen. My only worry would be damaging the screen with it being on the outside when folded.

Close up images of the Samsung look nice but having that smaller screen when the phone is folded looks awful. I do like that the folding screen is protected as it is in side when folded.

Ugh, wouldn't touch any of them! Bound to be shonky, early adopter stinkers! Give it a few generations...

Ill be ordering the Huawei but it is a little steep at €2300 - but it’s a proper tech must have, same as when I bought the iPhone 2G and had it before it went on general sale in the UK smile

I'd like to see the tech work well and catch on, but it seems than when ever something like this which has been reported as being on the verge of breaking through for years and never breaking through, when it finally does it turns out to be a flop and is forgotten about for another decade.

I think so early on in the tech these will fail with faults. Even a book spine starts to lose its integrity after time, can you imagine a phone screen?

Great idea I suppose but you have a phone with a smallish screen and a tablet for a bigger screen.

From what I have seen from the press release they dont even fold flat, can you imagine that in your pocket and the stresses it will be subject too. Phones in physical form in my eye are at there peak and are fine for what we want them to do.

The Huawei makes the Samsung look like a cheap toy.

The eavesdropping Chinese would appear to have the best product of the three but to me they all seem like a compromised phone + a compromised tablet. Hopefully the crease down the middle is not an issue. But if people want to spend £2000 for first generation of a new form factor then more power to them.

The Galaxy Fold looks truly appalling.

It is something I will never be interested in. I have a mobile and until recently I have had budget phones but that's a different story. I still use my laptop when I am home and use my phone when out, I like to keep it separate and I have never owned a tablet.

I am the same, I use my iPhone for apps etc (and as a phone of course), and for anything requiring me to open documents etc I use a laptop. Tablets are just at that size where they’re too bulky to use for phone type apps and too small to use as a computer. Plus I like being able to file things in my very anally retentive folder system on the laptop. I also don’t trust solid-state memory over hard drives - HDDs have their foibles but I’ve lost quite a few pictures and documents in the past when my phone has inexplicably st itself.

Does that justify the price? A bit of one-upmanship?

I've seen the concept pictures for the Motorola Razr flip phone that is all screen and no seams.
Seems to be perfect.
A lovely bit of nostalgia whilst making mobiles a bit smaller again so that they actually fit into your pocket without sacrificing screen size too much.

The Huawei looks the best of the bunch - the Samsung looks pretty rubbish - but not sure I can justify 2 grand for one.

It's all relative. If you earn 20k a year, then a 2k phone is ridiculous. If you earn 2m a year, then why would you not buy the most cutting edge tech, no matter the price? Lots of shades of grey in between.

I have my Galaxy S9 and a ASUS Chromebook atm. The Chromebook is decent for when I need a large screen, but the screen quality is so much poorer than the S9 (though admittedly it was much cheaper). To buy a tablet with the quality of screen of my phone would be expensive - I like the idea of both in one package.

The pricing is "early adopter nuts".

Seriously. I have a £200 Lenovo P2 phone, and a £220 Tab 4 10 plus. £420.

They want £2k to integrate both?

I've not ever wanted my tablet with me when I've not had it with me, and I really don't want my phone to become even more of an antisocial browsing device.

When the prices normalise (5 years?) then of course, great. :-)

Not really. You can buy a new iPad with a great screen for not much more than £300.

Not the cost, more the "I've got it before you, therefore I'm better" routine.

Your phone and tablet aren't cutting edge though. The Galaxy S10+ is £800-1000. You're not comparing apples to oranges.
