Trying out Tunnel Bear VPN and using DuckDuckgo, I logged in to a random site before I used the system for more secure banking.

Imagine my surprise, when I looked at my history on the Chrome home page, to see the site I had visited was listed. How could that happen with a VPN and a private search engine?

Any site you visit will appear in your history. It doesn't matter what connection or search engine you use to get there. If you visit a site it's in your browsers history.

The only way to avoid having it saved in your history is to use a Private Browsing/Incognito window.
Couple that with duckduckgo and a VPN and you've more anonymity than usual, but you're still not 100% there, depending on your browser, device, and operating system.

Why the LOL for "secure banking". I have always been wary of using my phones for banking and have not yet done so. Perhaps I shouldn't.

I am wondering how it appeared in my Chrome history when I didn't use Chrome.

VPNs, concerned about browser history? You don't get your groceries delivered from Tescos do you?

/sorry OP, not taking the p*ss but everything you describe smacks of hiding your browsing history from your Mrs to hide your "secure banking"

I'll let others get you back on track.

You do know all your browsing habit info, cookies etc still go through the tunnel bear servers and the duck whatever servers?
These are still private commercial companies you have to trust on hearsay, if you are that paranoid.

Ah, I see. You really shouldn't judge others as if their behaviour matches yours. Computers mags all advise us to use a VPN for added security.

Were you signed into your Google account in
Opera?

Do you use Opera sync / do you have an Opera account?

Did you just install either Chrome or Opera, or any other browser?

What extensions do you have installed in each of the browsers?

Is Opera definitely set as the default browser?
(Incidentally Opera is based on Chromium, just as Chrome is)

What operating system is it?

A VPN is probably overkill for accessing online banking. If you're in the UK connected via a UK telecoms provider, and using a UK bank the best thing to do is use their banking app on your phone/tablet, rather than your computer.

I'm interested to understand why you think an app is more secure than the equivalent web site?

I've always had two concerns with app on a phone/tablet. Firstly, you have no idea whether the connection is secure, whereas I can see (and test) whether an http connection in my browser is secure (by secure I mean https).

Secondly, I have a firewall, anti-virus and malware detection on my laptop. I have none of these on my phone.

A vpn only set's the endpoint to a server via a tunnell, it is normally encrypted in some form so offers more anonimty if someone tried to view your packets online

Your browser history is exactly that and total seperate to the VPN, it is a history of the sites you have visited regardless of if you use a VPN or not. As state incogneto/private browsing or similar is required to not retain history or cookies when browsing the internet
