I'm having problems with my wireless network adapter. I can apparantly connect to the network with full signal and speed, but I can't browse the internet or connect to msn messenger etc.

I think it is a problem with the actual adapter, as it doesnt seem to acquire an ip address - ipconfig tells me its 0.0.0.0.

Can anyone help?

Regards
Chris.

Sounds like the DHCP server in your wireless thingy isn't working. Assuming it has one, most do - is it a wireless router?

Mine does this occasionally - just stops giving out IP addresses. powering it down and back up always works for me, might work?

Sounds like you're onto something, but all my flatmates can all connect to said router, e.g the dobber who calls himself magnum, and I'm posting right now through and ethernet cable connected directly to the router.

Im pretty sure it's something to do with this DHCP thing though.

Sounds like it's your wireless card playing up then. Try

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

To see if you pick up an ip address then?

OK well I'd be surprised if it's this but my laptop at home has started exhibiting the exact same behavior. Sees the wireless network, connects at 128bit security, but doesn't get an IP.

Selecting another wireless lan profile (eg my work one) and then going back to the home one seems to resolve it. Total guess work here but worth a try I suppose!

good luck!

OK - *if* you have a firewall on that laptop the symptoms you're reporting could indicate that a firewall is restricting the access. And if youre running XP then do also check the XP firewall settings there.

I've suffered with this before - Zonealarm was on "lock" and once unlocked all was well!

XP firewall is turned off. Cheers anyway.

When I try and repair the connection is says it failed to renew IP address. Wireless adapter is a Belkin 54g.
