Can anyone help? My girlfrind's parents are unable to access secure sites (such as Barclays Stockbrokers), g/f's brother is talking about port 433 being closed, but doesn't seem to know what's going on. As they are 100 miles awat I've got no way of having a look myself - any suggestions of where to point them/what basic troubleshooting might be in order?

Port 443 is used for https so yes, they are in the right area. If they're running a personal firewall then they need to allow https through.

...if not a firewall problem (port 443) then are they perhaps using an old version of a browser that doesn't support 128-bit encryption?

It may be that some secure sites don't support 56-bit encryption any more.

Look for the 'Cipher Strength' in Help/About in IE.

If it is just https sites that are causing problems have a look at this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813444 it should be just a case of reregistering the dll's.
