criteria is listed at the bottom.

For years (i'm thinking maybe at least 7-8years) I have put up with having a basic Ikea desk. Using the cheap LINMON table top, with basic ADILS legs. £6 for a baic table top is great. but the only problem is afew 1-2 years its quite easy to make a dent or scratch into it. This exposes the fake wood to the MDF below, if water gets into this it puffs up and ruins the desk.

I'd like something more hard wearing, ideally in black, but will accept something that is actual wood. I've noticed quite alot of youtubers seem to buy some kind of ikea kitchen countertop and put these ontop of .some drawer units. I wouldnt mind this. but the key thing is being minimal and not too expensive. additionally i wouldn't mind some kinda desk that has an adjustable height, however i cant find mind reviews/opinions on these ikea 'office' desks'

what do i put on my desk?
not much. its minimal. basically my laptop + wireless mouse. sometimes i might have a beer beside me on a coaster. however i would like to add some speakers and maybe even a second monitor eventually

critieria
Budget. £60-70 max. may go a little higher for something exceptional in value/quality
storage: doesnt matter, a legs and a desk are fine
material: hard wearing. something i can easily wipe down on a daily basis with window cleanr or something.
colour: black would be nice, or some kind of natural wood
size: no more than 60cm or so in depth, length doesnt matter too much but anywhere from 100cm-150cm would be fine.

We had this one for 2 years, came the next day, very easy to put together and very sturdy. The top was very durable and still looked brand new when we got rid of it

Only got rid because we got a fanatic herringbone one from John Lewis

Honestly, if you're buying new then anything you get for £60-70 will be barely fit for purpose; wobbly, poorly made, fragile, and frankly you'll be wasting your money.

For your budget, I'd just get on eBay/Gumtree/local Facebook groups and see if there's anything that grabs your fancy.

it would still be an upgrade over the £16 i spent on a table top and legs from ikea. not really fragile or wobbly, the only really annoying thing is the material they put on the desk top is prone to scratches.

Yeah try Gumtree etc. As long as you can collect you will find solid stuff very cheap or free.

A brand new £70 desk will be absolute st.

I went for the IKEA kitchen worktop option a fortnight ago. £120 for the top is a bargain given its strength. Maybe you can find a used one nearer your budget?

I can't collect I'm afraid, so it'll have to be something delivered, even ikea wana charge £40 ontop for delivery!. Do you have pics of your setup? I may consider if it's a really nice table top.

I'm currently considering just getting a HILVER top and using my existing black legs

I've just got a pic on my phone with nothing on it. It's just over 6ft wide and the drawers were £55 each so bumped up the price a bit. You can cut to size and use legs instead though.

Don't know if you can still get them, but I've got Ikea Ivar shelf units turned sideways with a pine table/desk top slung between them. There were brackets available that fit the Ivar units for the desktop to attach. Gives me a desk that's about 7ft long and 30" deep.

Years ago I used a door (6' x 2'9") on two bedside cabinets. Spray paint any colour you like (but use proper primer).

Cheap and effective.

I made our own 'twin' desk

Two drawer units on castors, a black worktop two side supports and a central suppor as it's 2.5 metres wide. There's just enough room for us to sit side by side

I had to split the top into two pieces as it almost touches the sides of the room. I used a black worktop joiner. This means I can easily dismantle it for decorating etc

Two Ikea chairs

Bringing an old thread back to life.
As I will be spending more time at home, I want an office space.
I have a spare room (small) that I can use, but the spadce available is approx 1.2m x 0.6m
I want to add a larger monitor / screen on the wall so I can connect the laptop.
I'll use it during the day and was planning on getting the lad (10yrs old) to use it in the evening when he has homework to do (planning for next few years).

I am happy to have something built, but was looking for inspiration. Want to try and get it all in for £500-600, but that is not a firm budget.
What you got? Was thinking of an offcut of quartz/ funky wood as the suface.

After that, its a search for a chair, but am thinking of a EA119.

The room it is going in has dark oak flooring in case that matters one jot.

Not sure I want to be standing all day.
Also as thr boy will use it in the late afternoon, (and the is a foot difference in height), in not sure it will work.

Might call a couple of local saw mills and see what they have as offcuts. Not sure it will be smooth enough without some serious work or if it is liable to split.
Assuming they are open....

Buy a proper desk and chair if you are going to spend any significant time using it.
I went for the highest quality used kit I could buy. A Herman Miller Aeron chair which I refurbed myself for 250 quid and a manually height adjustable desk for 80. I imagine good deals will be thin on the ground at the moment though. frown

Going to get a desk made to fit the room. It's small so want to utilise space.

Been looking at chairs and it is a minefield.
Liking the EA119 (or replica to be more precise)

Just looking for some inspiration on the desk. It's not going to hold too much monitor estate. Was thinking of using an older 40" TV thst we have.... And allow me (man thinking) to put the 50"wheee that sits and get a 75" to replace that......

There is a loose plan. The execution may end up different....

These seem to be everywhere at the moment. I can see why.

Ikea aren't doing deliveries which require two people, so getting hold of the worktops is a pain now.

Standing desk means desk that can go up and down. Your boy's and your back will appreciate the fact that you can have it at different heights whenever you want to and that you can also work standing up.

Interesting. Do you have an image or link to something that I can see.
My interest is piqued.....
