Regrettably i am no longer clued up on current technology - could someone advice if any of these components are about to disappear off the face of the earth, never to be seen or heard of, or supported again?

The graphics card looks a little old but Doom 3 still supports it (I think they're up to 9800 now) - I would guess the whole system is about 2 years old?

Yeah about 2 years old

I suspect support for those components will slow down if not halt but it won't stop them working.

It will be a new system but I cant afford an uber spec. Basically my key requirement is : can run world of warcraft properly! half life 2 would be nice too...

Oh, and less than £500.

The other option im looking at is one of the dell offers, but they come with monitors

Sorry, to clarify its a little over 400 for the base unit with the key components ive specced mentioned - only other thing in there is a dvd-rom/cdrw.

I'd expect that spec to be offered at £299 or thereabouts.

I've just gone through a similar experience in deciding on components and they're being delivered today.

The only comment I'd make about the components you've listed is that the general consensus on here when I searched appeared to be that Western Digital HDDs were the manufacturer of choice.

WD the manu of choice?

I'd place them in the same bin as Maxtor stuff personally.

Price up the bits.

Where abouts are you?

If you get the bits and cant build it (I am sure you can) I'll sling it together for ya...

They seem to polarise opinions rather more than other makes... personally I've never had any trouble with them apart from some really really ancient ones that had probably been through some untoward conditions before I got hold of them. Sometimes they play silly buggers about sharing an IDE cable with a non-WD drive, but they don't tend to lose data.

Agree about Maxtor though...
