Call one of the recylcing companies that redistribute to schools and non profit types...

Or call your local college, they may have a Linux and or Beowulf project that could make use of them.

From the latest regulations:

SITA quoting DEFRA said:

3. More than 200 additional waste types have become hazardous waste, including items such as fluorescent tubes, fridges, TVs and computer monitors. You may therefore be classified as a 'new' producer of hazardous waste.

4. ...Certain low risk sites such as offices, shops and residential homes will be exempt from registering if the amount of hazardous waste produced on site is less than 200kg per year...

So, the odd monitor chucked out with the rubbish should be ok (as long as you let the bin men know) and as far as I can see, computers themselves are still ok to bin.

We give away all of our old stuff to local schools. They can use them. As a matter of fact, one of my projects today is to make two P3-1ghz systems ready for my daughter's pre-Kindergaten school. I was shocked and apalled when I saw the sign that said "computer" and below it sat a vintage IBM PC-XT (thought is was a PS2, but remembered the MONOCHROME monitor).

I'm planning on giving them two or 3 complete kits with a switch/lan and some old MS joysticks and stearing wheels that I have laying around. I wonder if Need For Speed 2 qualifies as "educational"

The last time I tried to give stuff away (i) the schools I spoke to weren't interested if they were anything less than a reasonably recently spec & (ii) the legal beagles at work weren't at all keen (Health & Safety & liability issues) and (iii) the bean-counters weren't happy either since there may have been tax liabilities. So I skipped the lot.

(Actually, I piled them in the loading bay and told people to help themselves. Not my problem if they get nicked, is it?)

I used to work for a large hi-tech company who gave their old stuff to India etc. Then some EC law came in saying they couldn't so it, so they had to spend money to get them officially recycled into nothingness.

Stupid of the school to turn them down. If they are ancient then let the kids loose on them with screwdrivers and soldering irons so they can learn how the bloody things work. If they break them, so what? They were free. When I was a kid my school was given a load of old Commodore Pets (this was when std school machine was an Archimedes and PCs were using 486s). We hooked the Pets up to osciloscopes, built I/O ports, etc. all good A-level physics electronics.

I turned my old p90 into a doorbell - at least it gave me hours of fun deciding what the next visitor should hear

There are certainly charities that will take just about anything that works and find it a good home/cannibalise it for parts.

I own a company that buys up IT equipment to sell on. With the new law about CRT monitors I rang the local council up to see what they do with them (as they will collect them for disposal)

'oh we just send them to landfill'

Right I'll speak to the bods at the environment agency I thought, plenty of info on the website sounds like they should know how to dispose of them.

Didn't have a scooby doo. Told me to do a Google!! When I questioned this they said they would get back to me. Give them their dues they did but just directed me to their website page that I had already quoted to them. Fecking useless.

All our grade B CRT monitors now get reused over in India, at least they are getting more life out of them.

For the really old machines, there are companies about collecting them for free (i believe) and ship to poor countries in Africa etc, for the schools there which struggle to afford basics.

Cool - it seems a shame to throw away machines of the P500 to P1200 level. They are next to worthless on fleabay, yet are more than capable of "typing letters and smurfing the net". There was a AMD P600, 10GB HDD, 128mb ram that went for £4.99 + £12 p&p this morning...

Interested in 18-20 Fujitsu siemens P4's? They're about 3 years old.
