after some suggestions from the masses, tried searching but everythinng seams quite old and (probably) out of date

i want to do a bit of light video editing noting too drastic just cutting and stiching gopro vids together adding text or effects things like that, although possibly as i get to grips with it more and more my scope of requirements will increase so im not after a basic program

examples of what im looking to do are
https://youtu.be/e8p48ra8oRM

created with gopro's free software which was pretty much on the limit of what my old laptop was capable of running it would crash every time i would add a new clip and i would have to load it up again also positioning the text correctly was very difficult to do and all round it was pretty clunky software believe it or not that video took around 15hours to put together dealing with crashing and general fiddling

having very recently updated my laptop to something that should be plenty powerful enough to do what i want it came witha free version of cyberlink powerdirector 15 which i gave a go and after spending most of the day googling and youtubing how to get it to do what i wanted it does seam to tick all the boxs and im considering paying to update it to the latest full version (£60 or £80 if i want the 'ultimate' which i dont think i do)

i knocked this together using it
https://youtu.be/bGDX4Y83qfo

so before i do are there any better options? my only criteria really is that it be a 1 off purchase not a mothly subscription as once i get something that works i wont be using it that often and should really need to update it while its still doing what i want and it not cost more then £60 - £80 i suppose

On a Mac iMovie. On a PC Movie Maker (if they still bundle it).

Both free.

I've used a few video editors over the years. I currently have Power Director 15 and also the last VideoPlus. They fill different requirements.

I used Pinnacle Studio for years, starting at 7 and found the interface very smooth and easy to use. The only reason I changed to PD was liking it on a friend's computer, and getting a good offer on it.

If you like PD 15, I'd suggest signing up on their email marketing list as you end up being offered cheap upgrades when there's a new edition on the starting blocks. Mind you, 15 is good enough for me.

I've used Premier Pro. It great but expensive.

Most video editors are much of a muchness. Stability used to be a major problem - Studio 8 gave me lots of problems. The only real difference nowadays is the interface and I'd go for one that you find the best to work with.

PD has thriving support with lots of freebies.

If you intend to improve technique over time I'd recommend using DaVinci Resolve, the free version is nigh on professional grade, but still easy to use.

A decent overview here: https://uk.pcmag.com/video-editing/16182/the-best-...

I said stability is no problem nowadays, but the tests show that there were difficulties with Pinnacle Studio.

The audio editing is top class on Power Director. If you need audio, then PD is about as good as it gets.

I use Premiere Pro but whatever software you use it has to be based on how easy it is for YOU to use.
Eventually you will use shortcuts for features to speed up your work flow and you will have a go to set of effects and features. What you have to do is make sure these things are easily accessible and quick to hand.
Otherwise you waste time trying to find stuff all the time and get frustrated.

Thanks for the responses so far smile

Windows movie maker isnt available from microsoft directly anymore and was discontinued some time ago i believe a mate has it and hasnt given me good feedback so far which put me off

If i had a full version of PD15 i think i would be set but theres a few options i tried to use which it wont let me and wants me to upgrade will definetly sign up to the email list though good tip!

Will try out some of the others linked too cheers the main problem i have is in order to see if i like them i need to make a video and learn to use them which is time consuming and googling editing software brings up so many results its too hard to sort out a few worth trying plus im running out of raw videos to edit and need to be picky laugh

so recomendations others have tried and got on well with or have found terrible and should maybe be ruled out are a big help thumbup

That's excellent advice.

Certainly, don't go by price alone. The 'best' stuff is often not the best stuff for you.
