Is there something better out there now.

Have used ZA for the past 2 years and seems pretty good, and better than NAV which I had before.
In a world where these sorts of programmes are allways improving along with newer programs alltogher was wonder what you guys use or ecommend.
My subsrciption is due soon as is $24 for a year of updates and support.

Personally if you are on broadband, get an ADSL router. They come with proper hardware firewalls. You can get them for £50, you don't need to renew them every year either.

It's what I did here at home, plus you can very quickly plug another PC in to share the internet connection if you need to.

I bought a Netgear DG834

If you want to stay with a software firewall you can't do better than ZA I think anyway.

No. Neither does Zone Alert. You need AV software for that.

It's just a network box with a built in modem. You just plug it into your BT line, then plug your PC into the box. You then open an internet window on your PC and type http://192.168.0.1 into the URL window (this is the modems location on your network) set a username and password for admin access, then type in any information you need to such as your internet username and password. Then, Robert will be your fathers brother.

In the modem properties (where you type in your username&password) will also be the firewall section, you can block all ports coming in or allow certain ones for applications that need them. Make a note of the ports you have open on ZA so you have an idea which ones you need open.

When you have it all running uninstall ZA.

Best to leave email scanning to your virus checker. To give you an idea what I run. I have:-
ADSL Router (with firewall)
AVAST Anti-virus
MS Anti-Spyware & Spy Sweeper
And checking my emails before I download them I use Mailwasher.

ZA Pro I believe scans emails for address book harvesting worms, but doesn't do a full virus scan.

From what I've read.

Not "dissing" ZA in any way, but I would look to move away before you are forced. ZoneLabs got bought by Check Point (enterprise firewall vendor) a bit ago. The first bastard-child-abominations have arrived which hook the Check Point VPN to the ZA product. Not good and dont play to the strengths of either.

Expect to see the Check Points move down to SME businesses while the ZA product moves away from consumers. There are plenty about and the choice is very much yours.....
